Getting a new laptop with 64 Bit vista on it.
nowadays I always like making a 2nd partition and install a 2nd OS just for backup/failsafe reasons.

Would I be better goin with Windows 7 or should I go with XP for legacy 16-bit reasons etc?

    Up to you, dude.

XP, Vista, 7, Linux... install 'em all I say. ;)

What are your legacy 16-bit needs? If games then install XP in a separate partition. Otherwise just run it in a VM and use the partition(s) to run something cooler like 7 or Ubuntu maybe, or both.

backup/failsafe reasons are non-reasons. actually i'd say, exactly for that, better don't. one os can mess up the other one, and such, and that.

and besides, yep, 16bit apps nowadays go in vmwares. that's like running old games in an emulator :)

When you get your laptop, FORMAT, Install Windows 7 64 bit Edition as soon as you get it. forget everything else!

f00k Vista, either XP or Win 7. I tried even SP2 with Vista, f00kin' slow as hell man. Win 7 flies and is compatible with everything I am running even though I am using the 64 bit edition

    I really like Vista.

I don't see how they'd mess each other up if they're on separate partitions..
Vista is my fave OS at the moment..

I just read about 16-bit not being in Vista 64bit so that's why I was asking. Nothing specific I know of

Might not have drivers for XP. W7 is not a real OS yet.. have to reinstall everything once it's out. Legacy programs might be a problem with V64.

I can't really think of anything I'd use then. I guess I'll just use VMs
