I have a Sony Vaio Fit laptop. Umm.. Don't remember the model name actually. And it's irreverent as well with my question. So, I'm using Windows 8.1 Update 1 on my laptop. And normally, I don't use much internet on my laptop so I generally tether via my phone. But I noticed when I tether, my laptop uses a lot of data, which doesn't suit my data plan on my phone. So I'd like to know about a software or something, with which I could track the data used by softwares and Store apps. So that I can either uninstall data hogging softwares or make changes to their settings. Any such a software??

i use data usage counter on my blackberry which has been great for the last 6 months. slight hiccup with last update as was giving wrong usage info but thats already been patched and sorted.
tethering is great if you have unlimited data but for me linking using my 1gb a month it sure does eat it up.

Theres items built into windows 8 for this. One part is setting the wifi connection to your phone as a metered connection, which will stop certain applications from using data willy nilly. Its what I use to limit data when I tether as well. Right clicking on the network in the network list on charms bar will let you set that.
Task manager also has data for individual metro apps with their data usage (and cpu usage and time), for both metered and unmetered network connections.
Beyond that, I don't know of any software programs that will track desktop applications, although I am now sort of curious to know if they even exist. -
Any software to track data usage?
