If you do, what were your reasons for subscribing to Office 365 instead of purchasing a copy of Office 2013?

You still get a 'local install of office 2013 and for students its cheaper. You get to login anywhere to use it, but I rarely do that, the local one is the one I use.

I know I will need office for a while, but the upfront fee isnt too nice compared to the subscription model.

Like giving away money to M$ yearly when you can buy the software outright and for students get it cheaper....that is one reason why and also if you work for a corporation they will get the standalone for cheaper as well. I took this option and got 2010 and 2013 Enterprise for pennies on the dollar and both have DVD install disc. So going and giving them money aka Norton A/V example that does no better then a free A/V that it alone works fine for me is a no brainer strategy.

I have 365, but given that I got mine as a student, it was like 80$ for two installs of 2013 Pro and a 4 years subscription, so dirt cheap. The only feature I use of the 365 sub is the 20 GB extra of skydrive.

I use Office 365 professionally, we moved our Exchange, SharePoint, and Lync to O365, implementing Yammer and CRM online. For us who are always out of the Office it only make sense to use a cloud solution.

The pricing varies, but Office 365 for Students is $80 for four years. It's $20 a year. That's less than one textbook.

But the problem with that is that $20/year is still more than paying maybe a single-digit value per year when you buy it outright. That 365 sub only works for four years before your SOL, but 2013 (and 2010, 2007, 2003, etc) will work for virtually forever without having to pay a yearly fee.

Personally, I use 2010 Professional Plus. Free through the university. And I have Dropbox and Copy and SkyDrive for my cloud needs (trying them all out, though I use Dropbox the most).
