Got an Eeepc I got running with WinXP and was wondering about Win7 Starter, though admittedly I might be going a bit overboard with Win7. Gotta keep some XP machines around

Uhm... hate to break this to you but 7x64 pro atleast takes ~11GB of space. I doubt normal 7'll take only 4GB. You're better to just sticking with xp or getting a linux distro on your netbook. Atleast i think it's a netbook.

It was going the be released a specific version of Windows 7 for netbooks I think. Maybe you are lucky finally.

there is no specific version for netbooks. it's just a cheaper version with less features enabled. all windows versions are identical on disk. (all 32bit are identical, and all 64bit are)

Windows 7 x86 Starter, specifically for Netbooks. Its right here in my technet account, only thing it doesn't mention is its footprint.

There are a lot of people who installed windows 7 on low capacity slow SSDs. I think 4GB is definetly possible with slight modding to take out touchscreen and accessibility feature.

You might want to go on eeeuser.com or aspireoneuser.com for more info as people here aren't really familiar with netbooks.

I don't think 4gb is possible - or at least I haven't seen anyone do it yet. As far as I know 8gb is the minimum and even when you do that you need to take certain steps during the install because Win7 will want you to have more space. On an 8gb drive this article says you can have 2gb free after the install but with the RTM versions I think you are looking at 1 - 1.5gb free after installation on an 8gb drive.

There's always the option of storing your data on SD cards or remote storage.

In addition, aren't SSD disks low performers when they have almost no free space?

that's relative. my intel still beats any hdd even when it's nearly full (and no hdd does well when nearly full :)).

but the asus eee ssd is such a bad performing ssd anyways so it performs bad at any case.

but i still prefer xp on the asus eee 900 of my gf. together with office, firefox, and other apps, without much tweaking, and still around 1gb left on the system drive.. :)

Yep... the SSD is only as good as the software programming. Windows needs free space to operate.
