I have many DVD format movies, most 4.7gb, and would like to convert them to .avi, but don't know how to go about doing that...

Anyone know what software I need?

If possible, I may want to put some .avi's into blank DVDs, I would like to know how to do that too.

    Thanks in advance

To convert DVD to AVI, I use DVD Decrypter (or the more current RipIt4Me) to get the raw data (DVD Decrypter should rip in IFO mode), then I use AutoGK to convert to a DivX or Xvid format AVI.

To convert back...ConvertXtoDVD works OK, I guess, but I don't really go that way...I have a modded XBox acting as a media center, so I just burn the AVIs directly to disc and watch them on the Xbox.

I haven't tried DVD Decrypter in Vista yet, actually. It may not work 100%, so you may want to check into RipIt4Me (although I think I recall hearing that it was also discontinued :( )

If you feel like installing Linux, the best program I've found for any DVD ripping under any operating system is called k9copy. Copies to another DVD, rips to avi's encoded in pretty much any format... it's all I use any more.
