I'm tired of using notepad & microsoft word for lectures, are there any simple programs that have useful organizational functions (things like a left panel, built in calender, subfolders, highlighting, graphing, etc)? I'm guessing there are, I just have no idea where to find them...

Microsoft Onenote

Is it free?
-rhetorical question
I guess the 60 day trial will cover for the semester. Hopefully I can find a free one that mimics it in it's entirety by then. -
Well, its worth getting onenote, IMHO... I find it very useful and pretty nice to use.

there are these pens and special paper pads you can use, then upload everything into your pc....
so you take notes by hand, then upload and convert later -
that's cool, awesome thanks people. I'm surprised Microsoft doesn't push this more in their marketing.... or maybe it's just my neck of the woods
I'll probably buy it, seems like a good investment. -
before buying anything try evernote:

Zoho Notebook. Free from www.zoho.com
It's similiar to Google Docs but more features.
Are there any good notetaking programs?
