Is this guy full of hot air, or are these legitimate concerns? Please, no XP vs Vista war, but if you've used Vista 64 it would be great to get some feedback in this area. I am looking at getting a notebook around Christmas and am thinking of going with Vista 64; initially with 2GB of RAM but I will buy another stick when the prices drop.

No problems here, 32bit Vista and Office 2007 for quite a few months and all fully updated.

Kind of true in that most applications only assume they can access 2GB of RAM. But once you use a few of those apps, having more than 4GB is critical.

Stuff like this happens (I have a PDF creator that doesn't work with 64bit for instance nor does VPN stuff I need...but I'm not using VPN much anyway), but blame the software maker and not MS. MS gave them all the resources they needed to make the programs work, the vendors just don't do it.

If you are worried about it, do some research before upgrading. Chances are most or all of your programs will be fine.

    Alright, fine...Adobe isn't working well with 64bit.

But the moment they say Office 2007 doesn't work because it is 32bit? Wow...they just lost ALL credibility with me. They are completely false here.

Translation: User error or crappy mouse drivers. Blame user/vendor.

There are definitely ways to make device drivers disappear. This guy obviously didn't try hard enough.

There is a known bug with Outlook 2007 once the PST files get large enough. MS already patched that one up. This guy needs to run an update.

At this point, I think MS is probably ignoring him because he obviously is clueless. That's my take at least.

So the guy cannot stand PRODUCTION code, but cannot wait for BETA NOT-AS-GOOD-AS-PRODUCTION Windows 7? Sounds...well...he's buying into the hype.

Bottom line: I wouldn't put much into it. Do your own research, ask us questions, and chances are you'll be fine.

That guy's on crack. 64-bit Vista rocks.

But the ONE good point mentioned so far is that a small number of programs don't work in 64-bit right now. Normally you can find an alternate program, if you happen to bump into one of these. But if there's some program that you absolutely must be able to run, check if it's 64-bit compatible or not. Same story with hardware peripherals (printer, etc.).

    A couple points:

Even so, you're certainly no worse off than with 32-bit Vista. And as Greg says, if you're running a few of these programs at a time, it can add up.

Hold on... these programs work fine on 64-bit Vista. It's just that these programs are only 32-bit. With Office, you'll never notice. With Flash, it just means that you have to run a 32-bit web browser... which is no problem, since 64-bit Vista ships with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of IE. It sounds complicated but it's not. It just means that some of the programs you run on 64-bit Vista will be 32-bit programs and others will be 64-bit programs. No big deal.

With more and more powerful hardware is being offerred, 64bits OS is maturing at a nicely pace. Do review your usage of the comp (apps, utiltities etc ...) and browse the net for thes software compatibility information under 64bits, so that you wont feel the "shortcoming" (to few users) of the 64bits OS

Same article, same concerns, same issues with XP64 ...

I am using XP64/Vista64 on my emachines.

    cheers ...

I run Vista 64 on 2 machines and I will never go back to XP. Vista is so smooth and all my software runs awesome on it. The guy who wrote that article sounds like a mac fanboy who wrote a bogus article and has no clue what Vista even is. Anyhow, Vista 64 all the way...

That article is a travesty. The writer is basing his conclusion that Vista 64-bit sucks on the premise that his experience was bad. This line of thinking reveals little about Vista's quality and a lot about the guy's lack of brain-power.

I'm surprised that that tool even managed to find his mouse, let alone figure out how to use it.

I'm loving Vista 64-bit, with the exception of my stupid sleep mode problem. Everything else is great though, I've only had one compatibility issue with my schools VPN client but I ended up using the built in Vista VPN feature and it works just fine.
