Auslogics disk defrag

Can there be hard drive disk activity (use laptop normally) while it's defragmenting or do I have to stop all processes running in the background and any kind hard disk usage?

 

What OS? If win 7, then it does the frag automatically when idle. You don't have to worry. If using 3rd party defrag, (not necessary) then I would let it do it's thing until finished. Read the docs of the 3rd party defrag program and see if it is OK to run programs. I wouldn't do any extensive video editing for instance while it is running.

 

Windows 8.1 here. Another note, once auslogics is finished defragging, I can't view the full report at all by clicking the link. Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't help at all. Never had this problem on my windows 7 laptop. The report isn't that important, just want to see the fragmentation before and after.

 

Pretty sure that defrag is automatic in Win 8 also. You shouldn't need a 3rd party program to do it. Are you having problems with the disk? I have never defraged a disk drive in 30 years and have never had a problem. I don't understand this need for defraging all the time unless you are having a specific problem. My most recent laptop is 6 years old and still running fast. Never have defraged as it's done automatically by Win 7.

 

I once killed an external HDD drive by doing what you said. Very bad idea since the read/write head is moving for defrag then trying to move to other locations for the torrent downloads or any other disk activity for that matter.

 

Defragmenting and using the computer should not result in a disk dying, I guess it was just the drive's time. Either that or it got hot in its casing and didn't like it, it wouldn't be the first time external drives got too hot during prolonged use.

However, there are reasons to want to run defrag when the computer is idle. One being that if you want to defrag, you'd want to minimize writes to the drive while it's defragmenting, that would be counterproductive as you'd be adding fragmentation during the defrag process. The second being that you drive will have to share its time between defragmenting and handling the requests from your use of the computer resulting in reduced performance.

There is a reason Windows does it's automatic defrag when it's idle.
