I find IE9 faster than FireFox and would like to use it as my default browser. I'd still use FF when I need some functionality not found in IE. However I would like to make the password autofill work in IE9, as I use it very often.
So far I've tried everything I found in Tools => Content =>AutoComplete and Tools => Security. I got it to fill in the username, but not the password.
In this situation, FF (even Chrome) asks nicely if you want it to save the password, but not IE.

    Can anyone help?

IE9 doesn't display the password until you tab out of the username field.

So... you arrive at a website and see your name in the username field, but no password. Click in the username field and tab out. The password should populate then.

That's what I have to do on the Seattle Public Library Site.

    1. Go to browsing history and delete everything -
    2. Internet Options -Content - Auto Complete Settings - make sure last 2 buttons are checked on
(I would also clear the history but don't think it is mandatory)

In spite of this I have run into sites that will not remember settings.
Do you have delete browsing history on exit checked on? If you do uncheck it also.

    Still no luck!

Tell me, when it works for you, does it ask the question if you want IE to save password...?

Wow that is weird, It does ask me I just did all the clearing I suggested above and it comes up at the bottom of the screen. (yes or no)
If it still does not work and you do not have a lot of custom settings you want to save I would try control panel -internet opts. - adv. - reset IE setting at the bottom of the page in addition to all of the above.
When U clear history does the dialog look like:

Personally, I recomend auto deleting everything in the history when you close, but preserve favorites. This way the website cookies keep you signed in.

It does work now, but for very few sites. Way fewer than with FF. As a matter of fact, there are many that work in FF but don't work in IE. FF definitely has more functionality, that's for sure.

There's password managers like LastPass and KeePass that'll hook into your browser and fill it in.
