    Just don't be the person that turns off auto updates and then complains about security issues with XP.

    I leave it on to inform me when new updates are up, but then i download and install when i feel like it. Usually its after a couple of days - if noones having issues with the updates then thats a good sign.

    Off. Microsoft only release downloads about once a month anyway, though I'll check once a week or fortnight

    I have the switched off. Sometimes there are some annoying updates that Microsoft releases, like ones that check wether your version of XP is legally liscenced or not.

    Auto update actually shouldn't deal with the WGA crap. They've designed it that way on purpose. WGA should just prevent you from using their little Windows Update site/Active X crap. You can also set Automatic Updates to just download and not install, so you can install them when you want, rather than it randomly slowing your system down once a month. Either way, if your automatic updates are off, I certainly hope you're at least using a hardware and a software firewall on your machine.

    Wow, you guys ever hear of zero day exploits??? I leave them on. It is rare that they cause issues. Just this past Tuesday there were 23 patches most of them for IE. Usually, within a couple of days they have been reverse engineered and are being attacked. If you forget to update for a couple of days you are vulnerable.

    My advice, leave them on. They do not slow performance or hurt anything.

    I update once every 2 weeks, manually. I hate having the system slow down and then have the system ask me if I want to reboot, every 5 minutes after updating. It's a total nuisance.

    On, but I usually don't install them. M$ bundled some stupid ActiveX warning/blocker with another update so now I have to click to enable Flash, Java applets, etc. and also have to click OK to load ActiveX on a page. I uninstalled the update and that caused IE not to work. M$ can blow me.

    I don't know what the big deal is with leaving 1 service running. I can't imagine how 1 service (which doesn't even run all the time) can slow down your computer especially if you've got more than 256Mb RAM. Most people end up getting 1Gb of RAM or more, which should leave you more than enough for any of your needs.

    You can always select which updates you don't want (a.k.a. WGA notifications) and it shouldn't bother you again about it.

    @huskyfan23,
    I've no idea what you downloaded, but I've updated all the PCs/notebooks at home and have not experienced the problem you mentioned. You may want to look at something else which may have caused your problem instead of always bashing Microsoft.

    Always bashing Microsoft? Wow. Please tell me where I ever bashed Microsoft besides in that one post?

    Do you use IE? Your signature hints otherwise so I'd assume not. I do.

    Maybe I shouldn't have used "always"... :D :D and yes, I still do use IE alongside Opera.

    I like it on. It's easy for me - I don't have to visit the download site, and I get the updates faster.

    Xuster you mean the red badge in the system tray? you can turn it off just go to control panel > security center > then click change the way security center alerts me, uncheck everything and click ok.

    Maybe it's not my place, and it's definitely off-topic, but don't you find it just a little ironic that you have, well, an ad for an ad-blocker in your sig?
