I apologize if this is another over-beaten topic, but I don't know what else to do.

My Notebook (EeePC 1000HE) crashed and no matter what I do I cannot get it to restart. Tried 'safe mode - last known config..etc'
with no luck. In dos, I see that all the software is there, but I just can't get it to boot into it's XP Home Pro. Just goes to a black screen.

Question: The computer came pre-loaded with the software....how can I get it so I can re-load it all?

    Thanks for any help!!

By a black screen, what do you mean? describe exactly what happens. You are obviously getting a boot menu since you can click safe mode (though ti dows not work).

What DOS? there is no DOS in xp.

Do you mean safe mode with command prompt?

    Did you run
    chkdsk /r
    yet?

    OK.
I turn it on and it all starts up (HD-Lights etc) I can hear it starting, then it just goes to a Black screen.

During this, if I press F8 I can see the startup choices menu, but none will start it. Also no help from pressing the re-set button thru the bottom of the computer.

As far as the Dos, I set the Computer to boot from a CD Drive with an old Win98 CD in and this allows me to have a dos screen available. I can see all the directories and files on the computers hard drive from there.

Haven't tried chkdsk /r. How do I do that from what I have available?

    Thank you SO much.

DOS shouldn't even see Windows XP if it is formatted using ntfs.

I wonder if you are looking at the recovery partition which are often formatted using fat32? Some OEMs used fat32 for a long time after Windows XP came out, but this isn't that old.

And this is a bootable external CD drive? I did not think the EeePC had a cd-rom.

Anyway, now that we know a little more....

    Download the following

    http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/rc.iso

This is an iso disk image. Do you know how to burn and iso?

Burn this and boot your computer to this and after a few moments what looks like a windows install will start. When it comes to a menu, choose R to load the recovery console.

At the command prompt that eventuall appears type

    fixmbr
    (ENTER)

    remove disk and reboot

    results?

Awesome... I'll do that. And let you know how it goes.

The CD Drive I USB'd into the notebook and then set it to boot from it. That'd how I did that.

    Thanks!

    P.S.

Can you recommend a good image mounting software? ( am I saying that right?)

Something to create the bootable CD from the download you directed me to?

    Thanks!

Man, I'm having a heck of a time getting that ISO file cut to a cd. I guess I'm too comp-illiterate to use that program U suggested. http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm I'm not even sure which file I'm supposed to use. Duuu

    Any other ideas?

Whichever operating system you are burning the ISO on.
