I am waiting on my Inspiron 6000D to arrive and cant wait to go mobile. I have a question about security issues.

    Scenario:

I am at a coffe shop, library, or any access point logging on to their network via wireless connection. Once I am logged on, I am sure I am visible to others on the network.

Is there a software package or security controls that will eliminate a possible hacker to try and access my files over the network, or even worse transfer a virus and run it on my system?

I am thinking that XP has some controls but what really works the best??

    Thanks in advance. [ :)]

Theres some programs at download.com that hides your ip preventing any1 to get you, btw windows firewall sucks. Go to zonealarm.com and download the free firewall

Or, just be behind a router + firewall, nothing beats hardware firewall

Well, hardware firewall is the best but on an open, free, public, wireless network... thats hard to do.

    I favour Kerio Firewall,

Seems to be better than zonealarm, more options, plus I get to be REALLY picky about what does (or doesn't) get loaded/run. Mostly I only allow a very select set of programs to run whenever, everything else I have to approve to run.

If you are in a public hotspot, besides having a personal firewall ..

Sygate is supposed to be pretty good.

Be sure to disable file/print sharing from wireless connection.

Be sure to have your machine fully patched. If XP SP2, etc...
(if XP SP2 you can use the windows firewall to block incoming conns).

Be sure to have av sigs up to date.

You can also look into intrusion prevention as well and/or open source like Snort.
