My new comp is arriving tomorrow, the wait is killing me.
Anyway, most here recommend shutting off System Restore because it eats resources and is a security risk. In the same breath everyone always says you should be backing up regularly anyway.
How exactly do you back up? I'm assuming you don't all have an extra full-size HD.
Assuming it's a software deal, what software do you use/recommend and is it free?

it depends on the level of backup that you do.
some people do back up their whole HD. some people do multiple partitions and keep their data on a separate partition and back that up. some people just backup specific files/folders.
you can backup to another HD, different media (DVDRs, CDRs, tape, etc.). you can do it with software or just copy/paste.
the idea is to keep a redundant copy of important data in case of a problem. how you do it depends on the level of complexity/detail you want to maintain. -
I see.
I'm planning on having about 20 gigs in a seperate partition where all my saved files will go.
I'm also looking at converting a hard drive out of an old desktop into an external that I could use to back up that partition (though I've never had a HD actually go bad on me, only the computers they're in).
