Are you the only user of your copy of Windows 7?
Is it only installed on 1 computer?
Are you going to sell the copies?
Is it for personal use only?
If you answered "Yes, Yes, No, Yes", then I believe you can make as many copies as you want of the DVD. You can only use the key with 1 copy and 1 install. -
The best way to "backup" windows would be to install it fresh along with all necessary drivers, configure it exactly the way you want it, and then create an image of your system in that state to go back to if you ever want to re-install it.
As for backing up the DVD itself, it has no copy protection, so what I'd do is make an .iso of it on an external drive so you can burn as many DVDs as you need. Since it's legal for anyone to obtain a Win7 DVD (see the links in this forum to download one), I'd imagine you could copy it as many times as you'd like. -
if you mean the dvd itself, than you can make as many as you want, as long as you dont distribute it

I'm pretty sure EULA says you can make one (1) copy of the install disc for backup purposes. Yet I can't find the eula.txt anywhere to check it
-
where can you do this? I have multiple CD keys from my MSDNAA account that I cannot use since when i requested the download, they only gave access to the serial key and not an actual .iso to download as previously done before. I've been looking for a couple weeks where I could find a legal install CD for free since i'm not paying for another license when I already have one, but Microsoft's website requires you purchase the software then download it.

just a couple threads between this and that one

Is it not legal to sell the install discs (without any lisence)?
-
No, it isn't. The data on the discs is still copyrighted, and when you start making money off of it is when you start getting into a lot of trouble (ex. jail time).
-
What about getting a home server and backing up to the home server?
You can have as many backups on the home server as you want (or so it seems to me) -
Hmmm...can it given away freely? Eg. if someone hosts the isos on their website...
BTW, anyone know why MS doesnt have legal download links for XP, when it has for Vista and Win 7? Did it used to have the download links before? -
No you can't.
What are you trying to do anyway? Hasn't it been said before clear enough? -
Dont have a cow Detlev...I'm trying to figure out if it is OK to share the isos for non-profit -
Well, you can't and it has been clearly stated on the previous page why - because you do not own a right to distribute the code as you do not own the Copyright.
-
To the OP, you can make a gazillion copies if you want (btw it's a real number, passed spell check and that's where our debt is headed next
). It's not about the disc as it's all about the activation key which has to be legal and pass the Microsoft activation servers.
Backup copies of Win 7.
