Is there any software out there that allows you to back up all of your programs? Something like the one that comes with Acer computers, that takes an image of your computer that you can burn onto a dvd and later go back to this image if you ever need to clean your hard drive or reinstall windows. Does anyone know if there is any way to get that program for a non-acer computer, or a similar program.

Well, the backup software on your laptop was possibly just for the OS and Acer stuff.

Vista Business and Ultimate can do it.

Else, you could clone the HDD and then copy everything back...

As DetlevCM says, Vista Business and Ultimate have a built-in utility to backup your entire machine to an external drive or network place. It's restore feature is also very good. Saved my bacon once already!

Try Acronis True Image Home 2009

It's the complete backup solution. You can backup, files, folders, partitions, complete hdd's, etc. Back then up to USB backup drives, Flash Drives etc.

All you do is burn your Acronis Recovery Disk right after installing the program. Then if your system crashes, you boot with it and select where the image or files are located that you want to restore. Select it and away you go. I can restore my entire hdd, OS, files, ets., with 1 click in under 30 minutes.

There is a trial you can download and check out. I know some of us, also have older versions available.
