I share an internet connection with some other people via a router. Some nights it is very fast and some nights when they are logged in, it is awfully slow.

I can log into the router and see their devices attached with associated IP and MAC addresses.

Is there a simple utility I can install on my computer to monitor bandwidth usage by each address?

Taking it another step further, is there any bandwidth limiting software I can use even if the router doesn't have such a feature built into its firmware? Since we split the bill, it only seems fair to limit bandwidth when several people are logged in or else one person downloading/streaming will kill everyone else's connection.

If your router doesn't have a throttling or QoS feature you may be able to update the firmware with

www.dd-wrt.com | Unleash Your Router or Tomato

I have a cheap ($35) Netgear WGR614 that has QoS (among other cool features without dd-wrt) and can limit certain apps such as games an torrents.

If you upgrade with a 3rd party firmware just be careful and follow the directions exactly or else you may "brick" your router.
