I'm getting a Dell D830 with a 64 bit processor. I've read some about 32 bit versus 64 bit, but I'm a little confused. Does this refer to the processor or the OS? I was going to get Vista Ultimate because my only choices are that or Vista Business (Home Premium is not available where I'm ordering). Is there any downside, other than cost, to go ahead and get Ultimate?

A 64 bit CPU can run a 32 or 64 bit OS, a 64 bit OS can only be run by a 64 bit CPU.
Ultimates only downside is cost, if not a problem go for it. It has all the options. -
Are all Vista editions 64 bit? I apologize for lack of computer knowledge.

Edit: I'm an Idiot!/Ok so I am not the guy below me is! -
Nope, the standard versions are all 32-bit. You have to look for the 64 bit versions.

So, when I order from Dell, and I choose Vista Ultimate, then it's probably the 32 bit version?
-
im pretty sure not positive all versions come in 32 bit there is a 64 bit version of ultimate it should say ultimate 64 when u select it

You can install the 64bit version yourself, I think even basic has a 64bit version. It depends on the vendor if they install 64bit for you and what version you order.
If you want 64bit you should probably order a Anytime Upgrade disc with the 64bit version on it. Some vendors don't send out Anytime Upgrade discs so it would probably be a good idea to order one or ask them to send you one.
