What does home premium include that basic doesn't? Is it worth the extra money to get it?

I would not ever get Home basic, it lacks Aero Interface which is the “bells and whistles” of Vista, Premium has Media Center type multimedia functions.
I have a question a little off topic: It's my understanding that XP home and Professional have different Kernels, My XP MCE reports as XP Professional I think because of the Kernel. Is Vista similar? -
Every review I've read on Vista comparisons says "don't bother with Basic". If you have to upgrade and can only afford Basic, I'd save up and upgrade to Home Premium.

for someone that doesnt need bells and whistles, home basic is fine. i purchased my machine with basic and although it didnt have the aero interface, i was able to browse the net, use itunes and watch movies just fine. I ended up upgrading to ultimate because I wanted to use bitlocker.
If you want to create dvd's, schedule back ups, and share documents, home premium is what you want. -

I'll second the above posts - don't touch Vista Basic. It is stripped down and feature-deprived. Vista Premium is not much more and offers a lot more functionality.

Personally I feel that if you plan to go for Vista Basic just keep XP. Home Basic lacks what Vista's about...you don't really experience Vista unless you get Premium for Aero and Media Center. With Basic its basically (Basic is basically,
) a slightly prettier XP with compatibility issues.

I went with Basic on my Thinkpad, I'm expecting to start using Linux more so I decided to cheap out and go for the cheapest version if I happen to need windows.
I really didn't feel like helping out their monopoly anymore -
Dont know if this works, but have a look : Enable the Aero Interface in Windows Vista Home Basic
Basic vs. Home Premium
