    THIS IS ONLY FOR XP
Bootvis is a tool that can be used to both speed up boot time, and then benchmark it. Of course boot speed is not just dependent on the hd, but the hd is the major component that affects it. Boot apps, fragmentation, etc... also affect boot time.

    1)
    download and install bootvis from:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=664&file=15&evp=42bcbfb72b106c700fe6d18eb6c20dbe

    2)
Open bootvis, click on 'trace' and then 'optimize system', then click on 'reboot now'

    3)
After your laptop reboots, wait for bootvis to load and optimize your system.

    4)
Open up bootvis again, then click on 'trace', then 'next boot', then select OK, followed by 'reboot now.'

    5)
Once your computer has rebooted, you will be greeted with the results screen. Feel free to post your results here!!!

BTW i'm using a 4gb compact flash card as my boot device.
Bootvis measures the startup time, after the initial bios, and ntloader sequence. My result was 14.62 seconds. Including bios, and ntloader, my system boots in about 23 seconds.

Using the 'halving XP' boot guide in my sig. i was able to shave another one and a half seconds, in my already extremely tweaked computer. Of course the difference would be much more pronounced on systems that are not as tweaked as mine :)
