Really, the best Anti Virus is abstinence. Stay off the Internet, don't pirate media and programs, generally practice safe hex. I can't abstain, so i use AVG as my condom.

Kaspersky Labs consistently gets the very highest detection rates in all major tests, often over 99% percentile. In addition, the updates are HOURLY 24/7 so there's nothing that can be as fast to respond to latest variants. My 30 day trial has been flawless, very unobtrusive yet powerful protection. It gets my subscription money. Personally, I don't think free virus protectors can put in the effort needed to stay on top of the rapid and ever-changing virus threats.

Norton AV seems hogging my system more and more , adding new processes , want online access to delete a file , its too much .

I too had Norton since the first days but now think of moving to another lighter program .

I have Norton as well, and I too am not happy with how demanding it is. I don't feel comfortable using a free one, for reasons already stated. It just doesn't seem like a permanent solution. I'm sure they are good, I haven't used them, but I like to stick with the big guys. The only time I could imagine myself using AVG would be if I just got a new computer or reformatted an old one and didn't have an antivirus suite to use right away.

I'm using Norton Corporate Edition, and it doesn't hog any resources. At times you feel that there is nothing protecting you. But I haven't had any infects in the last 6 years, so I'm happy.

i use McAfee, it does use some resources, but i guess i could spare some CPU and ram for its exellent protection and detection. My friend used to use norton and he said it blocked some programs, since there is no exclusion list, he couldent use AIM and programs of the like. (he recently switched to McAfee)

Norton is just too much of a resource hog. I really noticed it on my older desktop with an AMD Sempron 2000+ and 512 mb RAM. I used Konfabulator to monitor my cpu usage, and with Norton active, it was consistently ~45%, with my standard set of programs running in the background. When I deactivated Norton, it dropped to ~1-3% (where it should have been given the other programs I had running). That convinced me and I dropped Norton like a brick. I'm using Avast (free version) on my desktop, and AVG (free version) on my laptop. Both have gotten very good reviews from MaximumPC, PC Mag, etc. so I'm happy. Plus, my resources aren't hogged. Both seem okay, but AVG seems a little less intrusive. I get updates from both at about the same frequency that I got from my paid Norton subscription.

My Dad runs AVG on his computer and it slowed it down almost as much as Norton [too much]. It may be good for a freeware program but it sure uses some system resources.

We used sophos on my old school some years back, and the computers were infested to say the least, even with automatic version sync on every boot-up.

however it may have changed since then, I haven't had any recent experiences with it

Just tried AVG and it alereted a trojan in a proccess I was suspicious of for several months , seemed to heal it after 2 tries and found 2 more in a complete system scan .

It doesn't look as polished as the Norton but it works better so far .

Btw : how do I disable schedualed scans in the free version , the interface is very basic ?

EDIT : never mind , fount it hidden there .

I use McAfee on my Gateway, and it does a fantastic job at protecting the computer, although it chews through system resources like crazy. I use AVG on both my parents' computer and my AVERATEC, and it certainly doesn't gobble near the system resources of McAfee or Norton. Plus, it's free and seems to work fairly well.

I just switched from Norton 2005 to KAV. I've used Norton AV since 2002. And latest was Norton System 2005. Man, I got sooo much rams back using KAV, Norton is a BLOATWARE. And updates once a week, while KAV updates every 3 hours. That should already change your mind. Browse the web, KAV catches 99% of all virus, Norton and others are 95% only. If you are anything like, i wouldnt want to risk even that 4%.
    Just my 2 cents [ :D]

sutheep, does KAV offer any form of firewall to block network worms. I tried KAV over 2 years ago, and back then I wasn't too impressed. But I would like to give them another shot now.

I currently use NAV 2005 just for its mini built in firewall, cause the windows firewall is too crappy. The wireless network I am on (publically accessible by around 100+ people) is swarming with worms, and I don't want to add a fully fledged firewall to hog some more resources!

I would throw Norton out of the window once I find something with a good replacement for XP's so called firewall.

    Hmm network worms like what?
I use a router both at work and home. My router has a built in firewall. I think that should be good enough.

As for windows firewall, even though it's not that good. it's always running, might as well use it. I think the best firewall would be zonealarm. So if you using KAV i'd suggest get Zonealarm, that is if u are not behind a router or hardware firewall.

I let my dad use NAV, only one reason, it's set and forget, and more use friendly GUI. But it's still a bloatware..

    sutheep,
theoretically there is supposed to be some sort of firewall installed, but I don't really trust the local IT. Norton does every now and then (almost once a week) say that it blocked a worm. (BTW Norton's firewall automatically disable's window's Firewall)

I would like to find something that would do the same job as NAV2005 without having to have 2 different software running. I am just guessing here, but if I replace NAV with KAV + ZoneAlarm, I might end up using the same amount of resources! YES, NO?

I mean norton is working for me. I haven't had anything pass thru yet. But if I can get the same level of protection without sacrificing that much resources, then why not.

I got a solution... stop using windows :) hehe

Heartofgold, u are right in a way, but it all comes down to opinion and likes and dislikes :) I hate the fact NAV is a bloatware, simple as that. heh and KAV uses lesser resources and is faster. As for firewall, i'm behind a router, even if you have a software firewall, the "thing" you are trying to block it will have to reach your computer first, that's not very safe is it.

my suggestion scan virus every day, use a router, update windows when new update comes out, adware every 2 days. :)

I have used Avast for cleaning and for protection, careful on cleaning up a computer with tons of virus's though, you could reach the BSOD.

I prefer Trend (PC-Cillin) over Norton, McAfee and other main players. I haven't used Kaspersky so I can't comment on that one. Trend does updates (several times a day). Can be annoying when it pops up about new update, but isn't this better than Symantecs weekly updates? Also Symantec (in my opinion) is very bloated...

Also.. be aware that AV's are signature based against viruses. They are reactive in nature to new worms etc. It's a good idea to have a scanner against trojans (Moosoft- the Cleaner is a good product) for this, and also to ensure that your machine is patched... worms exploit weakenesses in software (os code) so av is not going to protect you if you put a vanilla install directly on the internet.

I have been using norton ever since i can remember....I find it is very user friendly and it also has a bunch of great programs included with it (if you buy systemworks)...I also use Norton internet security, which is a great firewall and port blocker! Norton is by far the best, and easiest to use out of every other one i have ever tested!

I also use Pc Cillin. Far superior to Norton. Norton's AV is a total memory/resource hog and its weekly updates are too infrequent. My PC Cillin updates every 3 hours (takes about 5 seconds), doesn't consume anywhere near the memory that Norton does and includes a personal firewall, anti spam etc. I would never recommend Norton's AV to anyone (unless your pushing 2 GB of memory and a 64 bit processor).

I use zone alarm security suite and it's great. Has the AV and firewall built in + tracking software removal and other things.

I was using Norton till they were messing up with their updates for me to the point that I had to get rid of their program from my system. There was a major episode with their online updates a year and a bit ago.

I've been giving PC-Cillin a test drive for the past 2 days, and I must say, till now I am impressed. This thing is so light on memory. Hell it consumes less than MSN Messenger !!!! [:0]

Hopefully its security features are as good. Anyone knows exactly how the built-in firewall would compare to window's (yes, I know that practically suxs) and norton's?

I really don't want to have to use an extra firewall. The wireless network I am on is really unsecure ... I just use it to get on the net. No file sharing, printer access, or any of that stuff ... just internet!

I used to use PC-cillin 3 years ago, and back then it wasn't so great ... especially the firewall, and the scan used to kill my PC.

I lived in a dorm just this past year. 1200 people all sharing reznet. You can imagine the kinda worms/viruses that were circulating. My firewall withstood all. Its secure (atleast for me).

    Hey Cman,

It's great to see another Zone alarm security suite user. However, I have one problem with this particular software. I notice that it won't allow me to use MSN at times even though I've set the MSN security to 'off'. It's really wierd, at times it doesn't work then sometimes it works instantly. Because of that reason, I uninstalled that suite since i'm a frequent MSN user.[xx(]

Yeah, I've got that problem too with Messenger 7.0. I reintalled 6.2 on my DT and Acer LT and it has no problem connecting. When I got the Fujitsu I wanted to install 6.2 also but it won't let me I had to install 7.0 and sometimes this is the problem I run into. I'm still sorting that out a bit so if I come across a solution I'll post here.

Overall, I like ZA SS, I don't use messenger that often so this minor problem when using the Fujitsu isn't too bad.

For virus protection,I like Nod32 hands down. It is low on system resources and has a very good detection rate. And believe me, I 've tried most of the other programs out there. Kav,is probably the best, but the new version of Nod32 will give it a run for it's money. [ ;)]

I use Norton Antivirus yet. My subscription ends the 18th so I am going to have to look for something new soon. I haven't had any slowdowns with Notron, or maybe I have but I've had it on my computer for all time and haven't been seeing it's full potential. I'll be looking into a new antivirus soon.

    Hey Cman,

I finally figured out a solution with Zone Alarm Security Suite and MSN 7.0. Here are the steps which I found/tested myself and now MSN works perfectly.

    Steps:

    -Open MSN Messenger
    -Tools
    -Options
    -Connection
    -Advanced Connection
-uncheck all EXCEPT HTTP Proxy on port 80
-test HTTP Proxy connection (should be successful)
    -Press OK

    Cheers,

    - JB
