I plan on spending some money on an efficient antivirus/protection software. I just want somethign that does not slow down the computer a lot (i.e. Mcafee and Norton), and something that will catch the virus most of the time. I need all time support and an efficient, but fast anti virus software. Some free applicastions do not catch everything, and I just want to make sure.

The latest Norton (and the corporate version too) is not as bad as the Norton from before. I am using Norton right now (came with my system, at a discount price though) and I see no performance decrease or effect or whatever. I am happy with it.

Else, please take a look at the best free antivirus / antispyware software thread.

And your statement "Some free applicastions do not catch everything" is not entirely true :) For example, tools like ThreatFire are pretty powerful, optimized, updated and widely used. Also Avira or AVG or Avast. Then you also have some for on-demand stuff like the famous Spybot Search and Destroy / Malwarebytes Anti-Malware / Superantispyware etc etc :)

So, think about it and probably you could spend that money on other things like upgrades or whatever for your system :)

    Visit the security software subforum.

It is true; it's just misleading, because no free application catches everything... and no paid application catches everything either.

Well yeah.. May be I should have said, "And your statement "Some free applicastions do not catch everything" is both true and not true at the same time".. Sorry for that.

Anyways, yeah as Swarmer said, even the paid one' are not sure of catching everything which is why many, including me, use multiple protection systems, but that which is known not to conflict with each other. So I guess its better to be careful about what we are installing.

I don't use any antivirus. You just have to be a smart surfer and everything will be fine.

    THE best

norton is the worst. uses tons of resources.

i also find it funny that norton has the virus definitions for viruses that you see days later.
