I own a decent collection of DVD movies. I want to be able to rip and compress to something much smaller than 4.7GB, like say 700-1000MB.
Any suggestions?

awww crap, sorry. I didn't know ripping my own DVD's was illegal...
edit: Nevermind... just saw the other thread here on the same subject, appears it isn't taboo. -
Let me squeeze myself in before it closes.

Why do you want to download movies off torrents that you already own?
Google search will be your best option.

Oh yeah, Slysoft. I went and searched through my inventory of apps I've bought and lo and behold I bought the whole suite, just haven't used it for a couple years. Good thing I did because it looks like they are going to a yearly subscription.

Media ripping, compressing, and converting seems to be a black art that is hard to find exact answers to. -

GKnot and Avidemux are good if you wanna customize the filters and settings. -

Some usefull stuff there.
I use dvdfab 5 most of the time, if not I still find dvd shrink very good especially for cropping the video, removing credits and maybe some of the start which will obviously reduce size. -
The people that make the torrent probably use really good software (not your 3rd party freeware) so thats why. -

Even the blu-ray rips are made using freeware, such as MeGUI, StaxRip and GKnot. No one uses AVCs from Nero, Sony or Apple. The best AVC encoder in the world is from Ateme, which is used by broadcasting companies only (and youtube).
There are loads of dvd-ripping guides on doom9, digital-digest, icrontic, etc....and all mention the use of 3 main freewares - Koepi's XviD, GKnot and VirtualDub. -
Andy - thank you. Very concise and to the point. +1 Rep!
