I own a decent collection of DVD movies. I want to be able to rip and compress to something much smaller than 4.7GB, like say 700-1000MB.

    Any suggestions?

awww crap, sorry. I didn't know ripping my own DVD's was illegal...

edit: Nevermind... just saw the other thread here on the same subject, appears it isn't taboo.

Why do you want to download movies off torrents that you already own?
Google search will be your best option.
Discussing this here will be against forum rules.

Oh yeah, Slysoft. I went and searched through my inventory of apps I've bought and lo and behold I bought the whole suite, just haven't used it for a couple years. Good thing I did because it looks like they are going to a yearly subscription.

Maybe if you read my original post (which I've since edited to comply with forum rules), I want movies to be much smaller in size so its more palatable to store on my HDD.

Duh, don't you think I did that?

Media ripping, compressing, and converting seems to be a black art that is hard to find exact answers to.

Thank you. So what's good, preferably free or cheap, software that will convert fairly easily?

You can use AutoGK, it you want a completely automated tool.
GKnot and Avidemux are good if you wanna customize the filters and settings.

Maybe he wants a digital copy? I'll download a movie I own on DVD if it doesn't come with a digital copy like Dark Knight did. Won't pay twice for the same product. Usually a lot easier than ripping and compressing the movie.

For best quality to size ratio, torrents is the way to go.

The people that make the torrent probably use really good software (not your 3rd party freeware) so thats why.

Not sure, since all mines are already .avi so there's no need for me to size it down. There is a lot of free software if you Google but I don't know if their good or not. I saw them when I was looking for a program that can burn .avi to dvd's.

Oh well, this is against the forum rules. But, majority, well almost all dvd-rippers, use freeware, because the premium stuff is not as good as the "3rd Party freeware". Axxo, Pukka and FXG use AutoGK, and they've their own settings up on the net and available to the upcoming Scene rippers.

Even the blu-ray rips are made using freeware, such as MeGUI, StaxRip and GKnot. No one uses AVCs from Nero, Sony or Apple. The best AVC encoder in the world is from Ateme, which is used by broadcasting companies only (and youtube).

There are loads of dvd-ripping guides on doom9, digital-digest, icrontic, etc....and all mention the use of 3 main freewares - Koepi's XviD, GKnot and VirtualDub.
