My i6000 came with McAfee, so I used it for 3 months (free subscription). Since then I am using zone alarm. I am just wondering what do people think about the firewalls that are currently available.

I use Sygate and am happy with with. But i cant really compare it to anything b/c i havent used any others xcept the one that comes with XP. Although i think they have been acquired by Symantec (sp?) so somethings might have changed. Another I heard good things about and you might want to add to the list is Kerio

I've used Norton and McAfee, but switched to pc-cillin earlier this year. To me, norton used a ton amount of resources, but was user friendly. Its been a few years since I used McAfee, but I've never been a fan of McAfee.

When not behind my router I use Tiny Firewall. Its an extremely effective and memory effective firewall that I can honestly recommend to anyway. Not very expensive either!

A good router is the best protection. If they can't see the ports, they can't exploit them.

I use ZA Pro V5.5, hate ZA v6.0. The upgrade was a nightmare for me and 1,000's of others who upgraded to the new version. I uninstalled, yet another nightmare, and reinstalled V5.5. Nothing in V6 that that makes the upgrade worthwhile, imo.

I use Zone Alarm :D Is it best to use a firewall and the Windows firewall, or just one of them? I don't work on a computer that can use the Windows Firewall right now, but I soon wil be able to so I'm wondering what protection to use.

Is Windows firewall less effective than other 3rd party solutions? If I'm using a good router (Apple Airport Extreme Base Station) is the software kinda redundent anyway?

Ok, I voted McAfee but I am also behind my router firewall. I use the McAfee Internet Security Suite which includes virus scan, firewall, privacy service, and spamkiller. I really like the included spam killer as it scans for adware also (use spybot and Adaware too). Windows firewall is a joke. During some classes I took last year after playing around with settings I tweaked one of the school boxes running windows firewall to have an opening in the firewall big enough to drive a semi through. I changed it all back, was just playing around really.

Best way to prevent getting a virus? Abstinence! Learned that in health class. Ah, anyway.

I read somewhere that Zone Alarm is kind of pointless these days because if a worm or something gets on your system the first thing it does is disable Zone Alarm. Any thoughts?

I think comodo i think its also called kerio is the best firewall. I think there was a post not to long ago that said pcworld said that comodo had the same features as zone alarm pro. I chose comodo and it is working great. I reccomend this firewall to any one. If you don't like uninstall it. But atleast try it out its free!

I was the person who posted about Comodo. However, it's NOT the same as Kerio, two different firewalls!

Comodo gives you a free, lifetime registration, and was recently written up by PC Magazine. They claimed it was one of the top free firewalls available, and competed with the pay to play firewall versions currently out there.

They tried to disable it, pass a virus past it, etc. etc. and it withstood all of their attempts to thwart it!

I'll second that claim, Cimodo is an excellent firewall; informative yet simple to use, not continuously intrusive like Zone Alarm or much of a memory hog like McAfee or Norton. Really nice!

I tried Comodo, but it instantly blocks ALL internet/e-mail as soon as I turn it on. I've tried all kinds of adjustments, but nothing works. Everything works normally once I turn off Comodo.

You need to add your mail programs to the trust list. Or better off have it scan for all programs, but only if you are 100% clean.

I had zone alarm once on my desktop, and it did nothing but annoy me, so i got rid of it.

I only recently got a notebook. I just assumed that the windows firewall was on. Went and checked it, and it was actually off (not reccomended). I enabled it, and will see if it annoys me at all.

Bitdefender on our small network at work, iptables at home. We'll finally trash that cheap Actiontec endpoint for a Cisco 857 soon, so I'll do some basic protection with that, and pass on NAT and serious protection to iptables on our server. At that point I'll just use Bitdefender for registry protection.

The Bitdefender package is great, a very effective firewall, antivirus, and antispyware solution. It has antispam too, but we don't use it. It has a nice small footprint, excellent heuristics, and it also has some nifty OSD style network and filesystem utilization monitors.

Traversing NAT isn't the hardest thing in the world, don't trust your cheap DSL endpoint's NAT to protect you. Not unless you have something from the likes of Cisco, Fortigate, or Sonicwall; and even then having a second tier with a stateful firewall is a good idea.

Zonealarm, hands down. Why would anyone vote for Windows Firewall?

I could understand why they did if the poll question was "Which firewall do you use?"

I have ZoneAlarm free version on my laptop, McAfee on the desktop (free from Comcast). When setting up my home network, McAfee was easy to configure, while ZoneAlarm took a little bit longer. Is Zone Alarm Pro more user friendly?

I'm going to give Comodo a try after reading that glowing review in PC Mag.

I was surprised to see so many votes for the windows firewall as well. I don't know a lot about how firewalls work, but i do know that the windows edition is rather basic. Basicly just a checkmark in the control panel with a few exclusion options and such. Firewalls such as zone alarm seem to have far more customization opportunities and options.

Based on how frequently windows has released security patches, i can't imagine that their product offers the best protection.
