i have a slow internet connection so i want it to establish mulitple connections to files and adjust any settings to improve the speed.
but i've noticed some download managers do things like begin downloading links before they are clicked, or load other pages than the one youre on in order to make them appear to load faster. I DONT WANT THIS, because like i said, im on a slow internet connection and this makes it seem even slower.

When I used Firefox a long time ago, I remember DownloadThemAll was a nice download manager, with many features and quick downloads. Not sure about other options, but you might want to check that out.

+1 for DownloadThemAll. I've started using it recently, and it rocks. :GEEK:

Free Download Manager is a good external download manager that works well with Firefox. All you do is click on the download link on a webpage, and FDM will automatically start and ask you where you want to save it, or if you want to open it instead.
You could even set the location for the download for specific types of files. FDM, like most other download managers, also use parallel connections to a server to maximize download speed. You can set how many connections you want FDM to create, but with a slow Internet connection, FDM can only do so much. -

DownThemAll! is great, it's the only one I use.

When you're getting all those links, you're opening up DownloadThemAll! main window, but what you want (just to add a URL) is the Manager. You should also get an option when you click on a download link to use DownloadThemAll, and you can check the box so it does that automatically. If that's not showing up for you, go to the Tools menu of your browser > DownloadThemAll! Tools > Preferences > Interface Tab > and then select to have dTa in the 'Save File' menu and what you want in the context menu. I also right-click on things and use the dTa OneClick, since that's so quick and easy.
I've used FDM a lot before this, and it works quite decently, but I do like how dTa is integrated to my browser. But for external stuff, FDM would probably be the ticket. Except opening FaceBook while having FDM running always caused errors in FDM. It was weird.

I'm not sure how fast any program will be with a slow connection. Try Download Statusbar, works great.
