That sounds way cool! I think I'll give it a try...

@Calvin
Affirmative - I have only ever used it in Vista.

Alright, thanks for your help pixelot, i'm adding that amongst some more to the list.
I'd also like to ask you guys a question. Did you like the list more when it was centered or now (snapped to the left)? -
I was kinda' feelin' the centered look, but that might just be me.........

XVI 32, a free hex editor.
http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delphi/freeware/xvi32/xvi32.htm
It can be used to inspect any kind of file, modding exe, bin, you name it.
I just used a similar editor (not freeware, though) to patch the Master Boot Record dump of my lappie. Add it to the context menu and use it to have a quick peek of any file you are curious about.
EDIT: the reason I suggest this one is that I needed a small fingerprint flexible hexeditor to install on my laptop. This is the one I chose. -
Snapped to the left and good work Cal!!! Gotcha!!

guys.........
how about us gals.................
good list calvin

When i said "guys" i meant dudes and girls.
Thanks for the helpful comments everyone.

About the hex editor
(this thread says nothing about being exclusively about Vista, if that is the case, my apologies).
Someone with Vista might want to try it out. After all I don't see any reason it should not be compatible with Vista if its compatible with XP. It's a simple editor that uses the same filesystem and conventions on both OSes.
It's small, unobtrusive, does not write anything to the registry. What could the source of incompatibility be? -
How about PC World's 15 best downlaods of the year? Most are free:

And just so you know, they are the developers of ImgBurn my favorite iso/image/bin/cue/nrg burner. And about the best program around for burning Double Layer DVD's. -

Ok, thanks for the suggestion qhn. Didn't you have a desktop search app to recommend?

I am looking for a good CD-DVD burning program.
What do you guys (and gals) think about Infrarecorder?
http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/
It's GNU GPLed, with source code, even portable.
How does it fare with burning multisession DVDs?
While in Vista I used Deep Burner free. I liked its spartan look, but I would not list in a "Best software" parade.
Is Infrarecorder worth it?
Users, speak up! -
Thanks Valentjn. I'll check those out.

Just a suggestion but maybe you should have a docklet section?

How can I turn this into a thumbnail? -

Does anyone have any software they want to contribute?
-
actually i got a question about one of the software in ur list..zoomplayer,and i apologize in advance,if this is not the place to be asking this let me know and i'll delete my post
But i can't seem to get subtitles working on it.
In the stream selection the "show subtitle" option is ticked. And i can't seem to find any option available in the DirectVobSub that needs to be activated and i havent activated it.So i really dunno what's the problem..Hope someone can help
Thanks in advance -
What type of file. If it's an anime what's the name?
-
Not really just a normal .avi movie with a .srt subtitle file
-
Zoom player is only as effective as the codecs you install. Do you have k-lite, CCCP, or any other codecs/codec packs installed?
-
Yes i actually got ZoomPlayer from CCCP
-
Did you CRC check the files? Or make sure that they are the size of what they should be? You could also use Media player classic to play the file, i give you a %99 guarantee that it'll work. If that doesn't work, i give you a %100 guarantee than VLC will play it.
-
hmm yeh there's nothing wrong with the file...and i tried media player classic and still doesnt work,i'm sorry, but is there anything i should do to be playing the subtitles,i'm assuming they are autoplayed..so maybe there's some problem in my understanding of how to acces them..?
-
I'm thinking something is wrong with the subtitles. Either you didn't get any, they are corrupted, or the file doesn't need subs.
-
Thanks for adding a "Last updated" line. It is very useful when checking the list to see if something new has been added since I last viewed it.

WinRAR is technically shareware - that's how it's on the website. I think you can use it after the trial is over, but that annoying "Register" "Register" "Register" box pops up every time you open an archive. 7-zip is waay better =)
But anyway,
Since I have a lot of anime episodes, and I'm paranoid about file integrity, I use HashTab. It's basically a shell extension which adds teh tab "File Hashes" in the "Properties" section of a file. It has the best license agreement. EVER. kthnx.
HashTab...it's the coolest thing ever!
(BTW if you don't like shell extensions, there's also HashCalc which does the same thing but IMO not as cool)
Do you have Filezilla? It's Mozilla's FTP prog. So far the best free FTP utility I've ever used (that's still in development).
Another alternative to Filezilla is LeechFTP. I don't think it's under development anymore, but it's still a very decent utility. It has a smaller install file, I believe.
LeechFTP
For you PMP/PSP junkies out there, there are a couple of programs that you can use to get a good video on those gadgets.
PMP Only: iriverter
How-to-use guide: #1 #2
PSP/iPod: 3GP Converter
CDBurnerXPPro is another damn good burning software. It can't create any isos, but it burns mighty nice. Burn on!
If anybody encodes videos into an .mkv container using x264, MeGUI is IMO the best. Been encoding with that for quite a while. There are other utilities that a ripper/encoder can't do without - SubRip, AegiSub.
Another great video editing tool is Movica - I've been using it and it's great. (Link includes guide).
I suppose that's it for now
And GJ, Calvin. Oh btw, meebo is not a software. It's a website.
Edit: I forgot - Process Explorer. It's your task manager and more. I've replaced my task manager (Options > Replace Task Manager. Do the same thing to restore Task Manager. Probably need to run this as Admin in Vista. Or disable UAC.) with this one and so far it's awesome. -
Thanks for the software. What do you mean when you speak of meebo?
-
Just that this thread is for softwares, and meebo is a website and not a software. Like you aren't downloading anything to your computer, and you aren't running it off of your computer. It's a website that relies heavily on Java (or was it java script?).
There's also CDisplay which allows you to view images, but it's oriented towards people who read comics - like me (I read manga). You can open up rar and zips without uncompressing them.
The link to Everest that you have is a link to the corporate edition which is no free. Everest Home Edition is free (you can get it from www.oldversion.com - just select it from the drop down list. No longer under active development).
I can't think of anything else for now.
-
Thanks for the info Amol.

funny... -
Alright, i'll add it. Does anyone else have any more suggestions?
