Hi LordVader,
WinRAR hands down!
G!![]()
-
You're funny. 7-zip > WinRAR anyday.
-
+1 to 7-zip
-
7-Zip is a great program for unpacking .rar archives, as stated by the last few posters
-
Thanks guys ...
OK ... I am a 7-Zip trooper too now ... especially when the price is right too.
Also saw the Author has 64-bit flavor now!
G!
-
Infact i use both
but i would give 7zip ++1 and WinRar +1
Why ?
7Zip = + Free / + 64Bit / - Primitive Interface
Winrar = + Great Interface / + Ease of Use / - Commercial App -
Are these both not Freeware ?
are there version where we can buy
& wht benifts does those have ?
Only bad part about these is the Icons are Same for a cab or rar file
is there one which shows diff icons ? -
7zip is a freeware (os) and winrar is not
icons you set them differently -
How to set Icons differntly
Please -
According to the last edit it's been 2 months since any changes have been made. . Is Calvin still around to maintain the page?
Anyway, it's not listed but I found a simple tool that's now completely free. Easy Video Splitter.
Easy Video Splitter can help you split large AVI/DivX, MPEG(MPG) or WMV/ASF file into smaller video clips. It provides a built-in preview that allows you to select the section as you view the clip. You can extract multiple segments of any size by using the visual editing mode, or automatically have the program cut the AVI , MPEG or WMV/ASF file into multiple pieces with specified size or duration.

They also have a joiner and converter. -
Well, a while ago he made a thread in OT indicating he won't be around anymore, and according to his public profile page, he was last on NBR on Dec 2nd. So I don't think he's maintaining this anymore...
-
That's some weird stuff. Not sure what to think of it. Anyway, I hope someone starts maintaining th thread.
-
I agree. He said in his last thread that he doesn't want anybody to modify his stickies, so I think it'll be up to another use to create a new thread on this.
This is another instance where a wiki format would be great. Either a select few, or possibly all senior members, could have permission to edit the page/post. -
That's not how I took it.
I suppose it would have to be a mod. -
Or any experienced computer user.
It doesn't have to be a moderator.
I think Shyster1 - I haven't (!!!) asked him - would be knowledgeable enough...
I think Fonduekid too, Scuderia Con... (sorry I don't know how to spell it off the top of my head) - I haven't (!!!) asked them either.
(Its just my opinion)
(But count me out) -
I think, that since it is Calvin's original thread ~ that any decisions should be left to Calvin and the Mod's.
I remember him working on this thread, and he worked hard to get it the way that he wanted it to look.
In the end, it's the Mod's decision to make the appropriate choice(s), anyways.
Just my thoughts.

The only reason I said a mod was to get access to the 1st post to edit. I'm not sure if the software allows assignment by a regular user.
Where is Calvin? According to links on his last thread he's alive but incognito and not posting here. No member "owns" a thread they started.
I don't know, be a shame to let it go without adding new content. -
I'm not sure of his whereabouts. I think it would be great to add new content. As, all of you have found some awesome, new and helpful info for this thread, (that have helped many peep's ~ including myself)
The more helpful information that get's shared, the better!
Yes, and of course, no member owns a thread.
I think you all should contact the Mod's and have them make any *tweaks* or whatnot.
Again, just my thoughts...

Calvin is missing a lot of the best Freeware, imo.
-
so what is the best music player?
-
Windows Media Player seems to do a good job. There's Winamp and tons of others.
If Windows Media Player is sufficient for you - use it.
No need in installing more software. -
Yeah try WMP as Detlev suggested. But Winamp is not a heavy or messy application either. Its clean, neat and very good. You can get in some audio enhancer plugins, and the music is made even better
One of my fav is "Enhancer v0.17"
Cheers.
-
My mistake. I only remembered the "I personally don't want anyone touching and messing with my stickies that I've worked so hard on..." part
-
Can someone tell me of a player
like we have in PPC Phones
where i can choose a list of songs
from a folder on my PC & play them
& when i shut my computer down
& latter start it & start the
application to play the music
it should start from the same song &
same place i had stopped it
thank you -

My German is useful for something!
That's good news.. it has been a while since NHC got updated. -
Try out Songbird!!!
-
Has anyone used Virtual Desktop Manager on Vista 64-bit?
If so, which one would you recommend? -
Smart Defrag - A defragmenting program. It's faster than Auslogics and it has the same features. Includes Opt defrag option.
Mz Vista Force - Something like Tweak UI was for XP. It can Optimize Performance, Windows, IE, FF, WMP, and more. All other Mz programs are included. -
These tweaking programs were discussed quite extensively in the Vista Tweaks Thread and many users had bad experiences with it. It caused all sorts of problems with their computers that forced them to do a clean install of their OS. I do NOT recommend this tweaking program (or virtually any others, for that matter).
-
Oh no, its been so long since the list has been updated. Have we exhausted all the good free programs available?
-
Yup, apparently all the good ones already been invented.
-
Actually, I think it's because Calvin may have retired from the forums - I seem to recall seeing a message somewhere saying that he was not going to be on NBR much anymore; I don't recall the specific reason(s), though.
-
There are still many good freeware not mentioned on the list.
-
If I recall the thread correctly, in which Calvin himself declared he was leaving NBR (and even more for those who remember the somewhat morbid farewell thread), he himself asked 'the mods' to take a decision as to who was allowed to edit his, imo much appreciated, freeware list/thread.
So, mods, what are you guys going to do?
Either you guys simply decide which (senior) NBR member(s) is/are applicable or should a poll be initiated in order to come up with a list of possible thread editors or a combination of sorts?
It would be a waste to let this thread dwindle and die.
Cheers. -
Awesome list! Not sure if it's mentioned, but you can get the VMWare Server virtualization software for free. Can you add that to the master list?
-
Because this thread will continue to need updates and Calvin is currently absence(personal matters), the first senior member (700+ posts) who wants the responsibility can have the "job"... just post here if you want it(first post from a senior member who wants the job after this post has it)
That member will copy the original post to a new thread (just give Calvin credit) and will continue to maintain it. I only ask that person tries to continue to be active and be open-minded(please consider the recommendation of other people).
Also, The mods have final say and we will figure something out if that doesn't work out or something comes up.
Happy new year!

NBR Mod -
Please keep in mind, that whoever takes on this job is most likely going to have to test out and try many software that he/she comes across or gets recommended from other members. I recommend using SandBoxie when testing out new software or if you have a older machine that you use to test stuff out on. Good luck to whoever you may be!
-
I'd be willing to take on this fun "job". I have a couple XP/Vista virtual machines that I could use to test out any software presented here.
-
Okay...good enough for me. You have the "job". Congrats. Create a new thread and copy the list over(giving credit of course) and let the fun began
.
I will close this thread with a redirect to your thread when you have done that. -
Cool, I copied the post here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4348352#post4348352
Thanks! -
Great list

Okay. Continue discussion there. This thread is now closed.
