I was just wondering if there is a good software for manipulating video. Preferably it would be able to handle as many video formats as possible or at least convert them into a standard format.

I don't really know too much about this topic so please dumb things down a little for me.

    Thx.

What OS are you planning to edit on? There are a lot of free video editors for Linux like Cinelerra. You can try Jahshaka for Windows.

However, I recommend you just purchase an entry-level video editing software that wouldn't cost you too much, like Sony Vegas, Magix Movie Edit Pro, Adobe Premiere, etc.

A lot of pro suites have consumers versions, like Adobe Premiere Elements. These will do a much better job at handling proprietary consumer camera formats like AVCHD.

Depedning on what you want to do...

Just converting an resizing - "SUPER" will do the job, the download link is difficult to find on their side.

    "Real editing" that's another matter....

There are no decent free video editing programs, you will have to buy one. I'd recommend Adobe Premiere Elements...

windows movie maker on vista can do quite a bit. at least it's free and preinstalled.

else virtualdub helps for some tweakings.

but yes, there are good cheap tools else.

I agree with the above. Virtualdub is pretty awesome but very limited in being able to manipulate the video. It can convert pretty much anything though some things seem to need an avs file, resize, cut, join, framerate adjustments, fixing sound sync and basic filters.

I dont know any good video editing program like sony vegas that does all the effects and things so i'd just have to go with windows movie maker which i hated in XP since it crashed whenever i did something.
