So what do you all use to play your music?

I use Windows Media Player, which sucks in my opinion and i am thinking of a change and it's just nice to see what everyone else uses.

I switch off between WinAmp and J.River.
I love Winamp for desktop work and use, but J.River kicks major butt for my HTPC. It can be easily controlled by NetRemote and has a slick interface. Used to use Media Player a lot, but if you listen to songs from WinAmp or J.River and then Media Player, you will realize just how LOUSY the audio quality really is.

I only have Windows Media player, anything else is a waste of game space. But i am thinking of switching now. WMP works fine unless you are really picky. But video-wise, WMP does not offer much codecs. Nowadays i can't even play an avi file without a codec download. Any players that come with an ample supply of codecs and have excellent quality?

Used to use Winamp. Switched to Itunes because its to much work to get the plug-in for the IPOD Updation to work etc. Though I still use Winamp often - it used to be my favorite media player but now its Itunes.

    PowerDVD for DVD's and VCD's.
VLC Media Player & BS Player - for basically every other movie in whatever format.

I just switched from Win amp 5 full to the lite version, it's less heavy on your PC especially when you listen to music all the time and have massive play lists.

I use Windows Media Player. It's great for videos, music (and library management), and the occassional DVD. I'm not a huge fan of the DVD player, but I haven't bothered with installing WinDVD. I will once I grab the Liar Liar DVD. BASEBALL STUFF!

In addition to the DVD player abilities, I don't like the CD burning stuff. It takes too long to do. I installed Roxio just to burn CDs because I got fed up with it taking so long to do with WMP. I don't like Roxio because the interface is so overdone and "flashy". I hate that stuff. I like the simple look of Nero. I have heard bad things about the new Nero, though, so Roxio will have to do.

I used to use WinAmp, but that was on an older computer. Now that I have an amazingly organized music library, I need something that will take advantage of that. iTunes was my player of choice until I got a replacement hard drive and I didn't want to install it. It uses too much memory.

iTunes and BSPlayer, which comes in the K-lite mega codec pack togeather with Classic Media Player, so I don't use Windows Media Player which comes with XP...disabled it. I also use QuickTime Pro, which has some very nice features such as recording.

Lil Mayz: Avoid codec packs like the plague. Only install codecs as you need them, or use VLC before it's too late.

    Yeah, same here..
The only codec packs I usually use is the open source xvid (xvid.org) and also the DivX pack (divx.com).

I usually don't need any other codecs.
Codecs are so tiny, installing them one at a time is a pain.
And usually individual codecs don't have their own installer/uninstaller. So you have to add/remove them manually.

Worst Media Player of the Year Award: QuickTime.
It crashes half the time, and the other half of the time, it can't find an appropriate codec even though the codec is already installed.
Crazy that it can play H.264 High Definition videos, but then can't even play a 5 year old DivX 4.0 file.
Uses waaay too much CPU power. It doesn't use the graphics card like most other video players for Windows. I know the ATI drivers have an option for speeding up playback of WMP files.

I did find though that videos I could play fine in Xine (Linux) required much more CPU power to play in Windows Media Player (Windows XP Pro)..
Because of this, I found some videos were unplayable on my old 600 Mhz Athlon when I switched it from Debian GNU/Linux to Windows XP Pro (I got a free copy of Windows XP Pro from MSDNAA, so I switched from Linux.. Big mistake.. oh well..).

I used to use WMP with dozens of 3rd party codex as WMP won't play 90% of the files I have. Then I switched to VLC and ALL MY PROBLEMS WENT AWAY! Kudos to VLC! No more 3rd party codex!

Can VLC play .mov files? I know media player classic can but VLC is a much more robust player.
I only wish BSplayer could play .mov files.

Now I just use WMP with the K-Lite codec pack and winamp for music.

Yup, I use WMP also.. Though I don't use the big ugly normal skin that it comes with.. I use the "QuickSilver" skin, so its really tiny. Great for using on a laptop.. Though when the controls are this tiny, they're a bit hard to click on with a touchpad. But it works really well for playing just music or both music and video since the window is only a tiny bit larger than needed to play the video. Plus its got that cool tab that you click on to bring down the controls..

yeah I might un-install it and get a simpler codec pack. I just need for DivX. The K-Lite codec pack is a bit too much I suppose, coming with two media players and a whole load of functions I never use.

My point was simply that you usually don't need an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink Codec pack. And that if you install an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink Codec pack, and one of them fails, it's a pain in the @ss to clean up after it. That's why I choose to load only the ones I actually need.

I know from experience that you shouldn't install every single codec that you don't need. I installed the ACE pack, I am guessing that it is one of the codec(s) in the ACE pack that is causing this, and every time I open a folder containing an avi file I get a memory access error from windows. The only way to open and view files in the folder is if I open media player classic and navigate through it manually. It is a real pain. I have realized that if you don't need something don't install it. Only install what you need.

    I use:
    music: winamp
    movie/video:
bs player (for the single files with sub)
core media player (mostly for 24/7 video watching)
media player classic (for rm files)
divx player (if the rest doesn't work)
    vlc player (last chance)
basically i don't really like vlc player. It takes too long to load a file and switch sub and voice. I only use vlc player if the rest of my players doesn't work.

really? i just right click on the screen and go to the subtitles and/or audio submenu. super fast and easy.

and i agree with downloading codecs. i use VLC player and have yet to download a single codec. i can play any .avi, .ogm, etc. etc. etc. there's no need to dl codecs if you're using VLC player.
