Just bought an E1505 from Dell with Windows Media Center 2005. Is this the best OS for the laptop? I've got a desktop with XP Pro. Would it be better to swap the two operating systems? Is this allowable under Microsoft rules? If so, would the Pro backup of my system restore under Media Center?

Unless you are planning on hooking it to your TV, XP Home is more than enough for most. Unless your desktop is a Dell, I doubt it will work. It may not work even if it is a Dell.

I'd assume that the best OS is the one that best meets your needs.

like falseperc says, you're asking the wrong question. the question is not "what's the best OS for a notebook?"; the question is "what's the best OS for me, as a user"

do you need to log into a domain (like at school)?

do you use your notebook as a dvr?

do you share files across a home network?

what do you do with your computer ?

Your Media Center Edition is the OEM version, I suppose. I think you can only install it on the original machine. I might be wrong.

yeah... most likely all you get is a restore CD, where you cannot install it onto anything but the original machine.

No, if you have other Dell PCs, you'll be able to install your new OS, as long as the desktop/notebook isn't too outdated. You won't be able to install Dell software on non-Dell hardware, however.
