What do you guys think is the best defragmenter on the market? I've tried quite a few programs and I am currently using Raxco's PerfectDisk 8.0. What I like most about this program is that it has great statistics and it works like a charm.

currently settling with free IOBit defrag beta 4.01
cheers ... -
I prefer Diskeeper. Especially since its Volume Shadow Copy aware in latest version.
PD does a perfect defragmentation, but its too perfect - its unnecessary shuffles too many files around, but this perfect file layout breaks up in several hours of work due the way Windows works with files. Also its unnecessarily defragments very big file fragments (that does no benefit). -
Diskeeper here...
Works smoothly and defrags constantly so I don't have to even think about it... -
id go with auslogics
-
i use Raxco PerfectDisk 8.0 too. lovely program. works great. noticebly speeds up my harddrive, and prevents winrot, and also it can cures what the default windows xp defragmenter could not cure.
i hear diskeeper have problem with vista. but not sure whats the condition is now. -
Diskeeper 2008 have no such issues anymore because it have VSS-aware defrag method.
PerfectDisk have a superior boot-time defrag though, a lot better than DK-one -
I use Diskeeper but I really don't know which is better.
Diskeeper works great for me. -
Ultimate Defrag lets you decide which files to place on inner/outer tracks. None of the other defraggers do this

The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Auslogics. Done Deal.

I haven't regretted buying O&O
-
I use auslogics because it's free and works well. Most of the ones people are talking about you have to pay for which i don't like so i'd say Auslogics is the best freeware.
-
What's wrong with the built in Windows Defragmenter? What is the advantage of using a 3rd party program?
-
Once again, Auslogics because it's free

imo if they cant do a boot time defrag they are not worth it..
-
I use PerfectDisk(for better boot-time defrag) & Jkdefrag .
-
I prefer Auslogics for a quick defrag and jkDefrag for a more thorough defrag with more options including ordering by use, size, etc. Both are free.
-
It is very difficult to say which is best. Defragmenting is not really a complicated matter.
I use PerfectDisk and find it fast and easy to use. I also like its offline features. -
Is defraggler any good?
-
-
Tried auslogics and like a lot of free defrags it screws the layout.ini (boot prefetech) files around ;(
These files which Windows places in optimal order itself to speed up booting, and proper defrag should not meddle with them. But many do. -
I actually use these three:
Vista Defrag - set up to defrag daily
Auslogics - Once a week, always finds about 70 Fragmented files that Vista leaves alone.
Defraggler - to double check Auslogics. Never found any Fragments after running auslogics
Defraggler is also free. Made by the same company as CCleaner. -
Voted for Diskeeper. Always worked well for me.

Has anyone seen any real comparison data between these apps? Something with an actual repeatable test to show how fast and complete each one is?

There is a pretty indepth review of the various defragmenters and a free program called JKDefrag emerged tops along with Roxio PerfectDisk. Have used JKDefrag on XP and it's quite fast and efficient. Apparently it has an excellent algorithm. And a very active user community at the authors site. Check out the review here:

There is no agreed methodic of testing. Many use the "perfectness of a file layout after defragmentation" as a criteria, which is not exactly connected to optimality. For example, run Diskeeper to the end, work for hour, then run it again - mostly only affected (fragmented) files will be moved. PerfectDisk and other "perfectionists" will do almost a full re-moving of the files, even if there were not so much changes of the structure.
Also its a myth that you can somehow prevent *future* fragmentation by laying the files in some "magical" way. You can improve access times, but you cant prevent future fragmentation - as NTFS totally dont care about how neatly files are packed in, when it creates new fragments - as it can be easely seen by looking of how much fragments appear on an active filesystems just a hours after a full and nead re-packing defrag took place. -

I as well use Diskeeper, but it is the light versions that came with my notebook. I have been thinking about upgrading but, I'm not sure it is worth it.
Oh btw....what's up with the new look of the forums??? I don't think I like it -
i have since dropped O&O and went back to perfect disk for now. i had some issues with O&O and have found it simply could not properly do a boot time defrag as it should be doing. also it is not fully defraging the mft as it should.
im going to try disktrix next -
Same answer I give every month when someone asks this question, Auslogics.
-
To be honest I just use Vista Defrag
