What is the best defragmentation program for Windows XP and also compatible with Vista and Windows 7. I am most interested in XP, for the time being, however.
Thanks.

AusLogics Disk Defrag, or Defraggler.

Hi.
I think a full defrag is a waste of time, I use AusLogics and it concentrates defraging files rather than moving files around the hdd, a lot of defraggers are OTT.

True enough Tinder, you will not really see any gain in performance unless the drive is REALLY screwed. But for clean freaks JK is dabomb. If you want fast file defragging Auslogics is the one.

JKDefrag. Never looked back after discovering it

Thanks, will give JKDefrag a try. I defrag using PerfectDisk 8, about once every couple of months, or after moving files around, uninstalling or installing lots of stuff, and I do notice a difference.
But after reading reviews it seems PerfectDisk 8 isn't the best out there. JKDefrag is free, so why not try it!
Thanks for input! -
The XP built in defragger is more than enough for most users. JK defrag is worth a try.
-
P.S.: Vista's built-in defragger is god-awful, and takes forever to defrag even an almost empty disk. In my experience it takes roughly ten times as long as PerfectDisk... -
I use JkDefrag and like it. Haven't had any problems with it either. If you're considering JkDefrag, check out JkDefrag GUI. -
PerfectDisk 10 (successor to 2008), free: jkDefragGUI

JKDefrag is the way to go. Hit Windows+R and browse for JKdefrag.exe. Defrag once with "-a 7" (without quotes) tag which will optimize your files by name and then defrag with no tags. Do this at least once everyday (you can schedule it if you want) and you should be golden.
That's what's recommended anyways.

Personal choice, you know??

I've had good results with O&O Defrag -
I go to Fiji when I run Vista's Defrag...and it does the job I want it to, in the meantime.

Thanks Chrysaor! Following the link, I landed on this interesting tit bit. I'll start taking frequent coffee breaks from now on
Why was the defrag progress indicator removed?
Part of the problem with the Windows XP defrag tool was that percent complete was not accurate or meaningful. Depending on the phase of defrag, 1% of progress could take from several seconds to minutes, which made the progress indicator highly unreliable. The difficulty here is that since defrag is a multi-pass process (multiple iterations of file defragmentation and free space consolidation) there is no way to accurately predict when defrag will complete since the number of loop iterations and how long each takes are highly dependent on the layout of the files on the volume, the level of file and free space fragmentation, and the other system activity. While I agree that having no progress is bad, misleading progress I believe is worse. Also, the idea behind the new automated defrag is that users will not have to think about it not worry about the progress it is making. With defrag running regularly, the system will be close to optimal levels of fragmentation, and subsequent defrag runs should not take long. -
Vista's Auto defrag runs only when the computer is idle. Most of us don't leave our notebooks idle. We only put it to sleep or shut down. So the defrag process never completes fully. Manually defragging your HD will be the way to go.

Best defragger on XP and Vista in my experience is Diskeeper 2009 Pro: automatic, comprehensive and fast. Haven't tried it on 7 but it should work I guess.
Infact, I haven't even gotten around to downloading the 7 beta because of work pressures and lack of time. -
Windows Defragmenter bites. Don't believe me? Run it and then run JKDefrag to see that it has separated all your files and has not optimized it. Let JkDefrag finish and run Windows Defragmenter again. Now run JKDefrag to observe the sub-mediocre job Windows did to undo what JKDefrag properly executed.
Don't believe the hype; Windows can't maintain its own operating system. -
