the price is just ridiculous for photoshop, so I was going to just download it from limewire, but Im not willing to take that risk. So I have heard there are some good, free alternatives to it. What is the best one?

GIMP is the best free alternative.

I'd say it's Paint.NET. There's no real replacement for Photoshop, but if you just need something to make lolcats, Paint.NET is excellent.

If you want something for light photo editing Paint.NET is your best bet, if you want something a lot more powerful that rivals the power of Photoshop itself then get GIMP.

    GIMP is better.
As others have said, GIMP is really great.

I second this. Since using GIMP, I don't need to use photoshop anymore.

The gimp is quite powerful if you manage to get over the quite clunky interface....

Check out GimpShop. It's very much like Photoshop. If you're familar with PS, you'll probably dive right into GIMPShop!

I don't know much about photo editing programs so bear with me. Why is Gimp better than paint.net? One of the downsides I've noticed when using paint.net is that the photo quality is lowered after editing, other that I haven't noticed much else.

GIMP is better than Paint.NET because of it's power as I've said before, it rivals Photoshop itself while Paint.NET is meant to be much easier and thus has a lot less features.

GIMP is more advanced than Paint.NET.
