I see this software mentioned a lot. Is there something special about it, vs. others (like WMP, etc)?

    VLC Media Player
    Gom Player

Both free, download, use, and then make your own judgement on which you prefer.

    keep it simple my friend!

It's better because it has its own built-in codecs and can play 98% of the files you throw at it. This means that you can download and install VLC, then drag and drop a file into the player and it'll most likely play. The majority of other players need external codecs to be installed in order to play certain files. VLC can even play broken files. This feature is helpful when, for example, you're downloading a video and you want to make sure you have the video you want even before you've completely downloaded it.

Hi.. From a free software i don't expect fancy features like Power DVD like enhanced sound for notebooks or different video settings, themes, etc..
I expect to have good quality picture, an easy navigation and features like screen resizing, fast forward, next titles, subtitles, you know.. the basics. And with GOM Player, the DVD look good but didn't like the navigation through the menu and the options where rather limited.

I assume you use Vista Home Premium, and you should be fine with WMP11 since it has builtin MPEG decoder. I am using one myself, and I don't see any problems.

I don't know what type of computer you have, but if you have a Dell you could use MediaDirect. I sometimes use this instead of VLC. As mentioned though, VLC plays anything which is great. I have many .avi's on my computer of full movies that I've just ripped onto the disc for ease when traveling and MediaDirect can play like two of them only. VLC; every one.

    Even WMP 11 does this.

After seeing the title of this thread, I was going to come in and say that you'll probably get a lot of VLC player suggestions. :p
    Looks like I was right. :p :D
The only thing I know about VLC, it supposedly supports A LOT of formats. Give it a try. ;)

It does? I have a few AVI files that it can't play unless I install some codecs. VLC doesn't have this problem.
