    I use XP-64bit on my AMD desktop and absolutely love its performance/stability.
    I want to experience this on a laptop (and 4-gigs of ram), so I want to know who has the best driver support, etc.

    If you're getting a new machine, you might as well go for Vista 64-bit :D

    just all the crap that everyone B****es about, like wireless networking, resource hogging etc. Plus i am a architecture student so i need to be able to harness the potential of all the resources at my disposal. If I could use Autodesk on Ubuntu I would.

    what has "EVERYONE" been talking about.... I don't seem to be talking negative of Vista (much).... so that's not everyone.... And what "Crap" ?

    Had no problems with it whatsoever... !!

    Not much to think about if you have 2GB+ of RAM... I have 4GB on my new laptop and it works much faster and boots faster than my old desktop with 1GB RAM and XP!!! Faster than it'll EVER be!!

    What resources exactly ?

    Don't listen to other people's problems. Most of their problems can be resolved quite easily. Try it out for yourself. Give Vista a chance. I really enjoy Vista over XP.

    If you`re into CAD rendering, any card from ati X1600 / nvidia go 7600 and up would be enough.
    Now about the OS. Vista would give you headaches at first, but trust me , it ain`t all that bad. It looks cool,it`s very functional,and with the release of ServicePack1 it`s faster and better performing. Vista 32 bit should be ok for all you need, since Vista x64 still has driver issues.
    As long as you get the system with minimum RAM and buy 4 gigs from newegg(2x2gb sticks) for ~80$ Vista and your programs would have a smooth sail.
    A 2.0 Ghz CPu, a 256 mb dedicated GPU ( stick only with card in at least this type of format x600 (meaning X1600,X1700,X1800 ,HD 2600, etc or Geforce Go 7600, 7700,7800 and 8600M GT,8700M GT,8800M GTX) ,a good hard drive and 4 gigs of ram should be sufficient.
    Also you sound like you need a 17 inch screen with a big resolution, I suggest at leastr WSXGA+ (1680x1050).

    To OP: I would go for
    http://powernotebooks.com/category.php?catId=78#id2269

    I use Vista and I don't like it as mush as XP.

    I have hopeless episodes of SF incompatibility;
    PC being sluggish compared to older PC with XP;
    Random and - still unresolved - failures to wake up from standby (===>just like Win2000 used to behave when just released).

    All this with SP1 and latest updates. Vista is not a clean OS and there're good reasons to stay with XP as of May 2008.

    I really dont have a problem at all with Vista. I like it more than XP in many way. Networking for me is as fast as XP. Start up isnt but who cares about that? its not like 20 secs are going to kill you. Also, most people who argue that vista is crap are probally running old hardware.

    (1) Until you have a problem. I also thought Vista was good until accumulating Vista-specific issues made me think again.

    (2) On the opposite, HW is often better than Vista claims it needs.
    I have T7700, SantaRosa, 2GB, 200GB/7200RPM, GeForce8600/512MB and I have issues. On my 4-year old XP machine I have none.
    In my mind, MS is clearly busy with something other than finishing up Vista.

    BTW, XP64 benchmarks in CPU and graphics tests better than XP32 and Vista32/64, so OP has even more reason to stay with XP64.

    hi !

    i'm in your case too.
    i'm searching for a full compatible 64bits OS notebook. I need this for 3D animation rendering (NOT GAMING and NOT OFFICING and NOT NETWORKING neither) !

    All people who said x64 (whatever XP64 or vista64) was a sh..t are the people who had problems in game ! Off course games are not x64 bits compatible !!!!

    But, in professional application such 3D, graphic, hard calcul such mathemacal, x64 did the difference with 32bits sytems.
    For exemple, even on my old computer (Pentium D960, so 2cores) i have installed XP 32 and X64. I have 2 GB of RAM and a ATI HD2400 video card.
    In SuperPi 1M test i gain 5 seconds in XP64 !
    In Cinebench R10 benchmark, i gain 30s !!!!!!!! WITH THE SAME HARDWARE !

    So, i search a lapbook x64 compatible too.

    I targeted the DELL PRECISION because dell offer Vista64/XP64 , so i guess it is full 64bits supported without one issue. Also Dell Precision have Nvidia Quadro video card : pretty cool for 3d rendering or preview rendering.

    But my heat shake also for Alienware Mx15 but it is not confirmed full 64 bits supported....

    bye
