I know of Trillian, but are there any others that are better than Trillian? Do any include some of the features that you can get with the standard messengers themselves? (such as photo sharing and sending files etc)

Trillian is still the gold standard as far as I know.

I decided to link you to the slashdot article itself since maybe some of the comments might be useful to you as well in addition to the actual review. -
Pidgin is pretty good... runs on Windows + Linux. It used to be called GAIM but AOL wasn't too happy about the AIM part of it, so they changed their name. http://www.pidgin.im
It supports file transfers but not image, etc (I think)... I'm running Trillian when using XP and Pidgin when on Ubuntu.
Oh and it's open source -
Yup Trillain & GAIM/Pidgin is all you need.

I would really like to know when the new yahoo messenger is coming out. The 8.1 version is just so ugly when using it on Vista.

Another vote for Pidgin.
The funny thing is, Gaim used the 'AIM' abbreviation for AOL Instant Messenger before AOL did. In fact, it used to be called GTK+ AOL Instant Messenger, and AOL complained prompting the first name change. Shortly after AOL started calling their own client AIM. -
I use Trillian at home and Pidgin at work/school. Both are pretty good programs, but on Windows, Trillian is just that bit more polished. -

I used Trillian way back when, it was flawless for me.
AIM and all the other messengers have added so many features since then tho so I am sure its harder to have an all-in-one.
Only one I have on my machine now is X-Fire because I use it to see if my friends are playing a game online. -
I use Miranda.

Open-source. Supports any chat thing you can think of through plugins. hundreds of plugins for other functionality. Customizable themes and options. Ridiculously small resource footprint.
Best multi messenger app?
