I just got my Asus Eee 1005HA . It's the first PC I've had without a CD or DVD as part of it. Since I want to take advantage of the long battery life as I travel (expect at least 3 5+ hour flights in the next 6 weeks), and I'd still like to watch movies and such, I figure I should load some software to:
1- Rip or convert DVDs to a hard disk version
2- Play the hard disk versions
For 2 I've already got Windows Media Player, I've downloaded VLC and Quicktime players as well.
So, what should I get ( I don't mind paying a little bit for legitimate software if it's better than shareware/freeware)?
Should I get certain codecs?
What about creating a virtual DVD (iso) file on the hard disk versu converting to movie files (WMV, AVI, MPEG4., etc.)
Better players out there?
Are there sites that I can download movies from (I'm willing to pay for these).
Thanks for any advice or help.

for ripping and converting DVDs, HandBrake makes it super ez.

Format Factory is great for this. You can rip DVD's CD's, etc to video files or ISOs. Also has a tonne of other conversion options, and its free! http://www.formatoz.com/

Format Factory looks good in screen shots, but I don't see the option to rip the DVD to a virtual DVD (ISO?). Is it part of the program?
-
Yup. Its under the 'ROM Device' tab on the left. It gives the options: 'DVD to Video File', 'Music CD to Audio File', 'DVD/CD to ISO/CD'. and 'ISO<->CSO'.

You could use FairUse. Quality of the free version should be more than sufficient for a netbook.
Best sites for downloading movies are...*ahem*...not mentionable. -
+1 Absolutely.

Any recommendations for something similar that works with 64-Bit?
Best video software for a netbook?
