I recently purchased my dad a new Dell E6400, and when he started to transfer his documents I noticed that he's been backing up his documents to a bunch of USB drives.

I've bought him a HDD and put it in an external enclosure, what's the best way to automatically back up his data? Ideally every night or so his external drive would just sync with his internal drive, so that should the internal one fail, he could simply pop the external one out of the enclosure, stick it in his laptop, and have it work just like the old one.
