I'm curious what the most effective way to run 1080p movies. I have a Lenovo U350 with SU4100 (2x1.3Ghz) and the GMA 4500HD video card. So when I use the HDMI cable to plug on my LCD TV, I can run 1080p movies but its "laggy" from time to time. For example some scenes goes too slow because too much graphics going on orso.

Is there a way to fix/improve this? The laptop runs 720p perfectly fine. I'm using CCCP to watch my movie.

You could close every available task, make whatever operating system you use look like windows 95 after a few tweaks, get a better laptop, quite a few options.

Getting a new laptop is not an option for me. There is no way to safely overclock it by a small amount and test it?

What are the factors that decides how good a movie runs, the cpu speed is the most important?

have you tried playing it with VLC player? no extra codec packs needed and it offloads to the gpu (not sure about performance on your integrated graphics, though) might be worth a shot.

No previous experience with Lenovo, what operating system do you use? I feel it would be safe to say with vista or windows 7 you can tweak both operating systems enough to increase the performance enough for your MKV files.

Check out this guide it is really helpful:
Accelerate x.264 1080p movies over the GPU Guide

In my old laptop which had a 2.0 turion AMD and a 3650 ati card I used K-Lite Video Codec with Media Player Classic.

I have tried numerous programs and Media Player Classic plays mkv the best! I threw many blu ray rips from size ranging from 15gb to 5gb and they all ran smooth and fine in 1080p. Also, the link from guru3d will tell you how to customized media player classic to properly play mkv.

I tried that but it seems it gotten worse lol, it hangs up more than ever now. Does it only work with Ati/Nvidia GPU's? Mine is just GMA4500HD

The Intel 4500MHD should have no problem with 1080p content. I've found that Shark007's Windows 7 Codec Pack with Windows Media Player (in installation, don't install any media player - then just use WMP to open the .mkv file) handles videos very well. Even my crappy Intel Celeron desktop can play 1080p content, so I see no reason why your laptop wouldn't be able to

Well it's not a computer per se; but I watch those on my PS3. See here!

So if that's an option you may wanna go that route and watch them on an HDTV for ex.

On a recent clean install I went from MPC and KLite codec pack to MPC and CCCP. I had lagging issues on some avi, mp4, wmv files. This never happened before so I went back to the standard KLite codec pack.

This is simply on the laptop, not even an HDTV. I would not think your computer should have problems 'moving' the picture on the television, the tv is acting as a projection screen. Is your GPU driver up to date? I would try adjusting your drivers and settings for the video card and video player.

    +1

VLC doesn't reliably offload to the GPU like Windows Media Player.

Stick with Windows Media player and Shark007.

All about KM Player. Plays all my files including .mkv perfectly with minimal resources. As far as trying to get your 1080p to run as smooth as possible, open task manager, and exit every running program besides the video player (whatever you use, I recc. KM Player), it might help.

I've had pretty good luck with VLC, my mkv files used to lag with mediaplayer classic + CoreAVC codec, but with the latest VLC player I haven't seen any noticeable lag.

K-lite codecs are great. When you install them choose "lot's of stuff" to play mkv the best.
BUT I choose The KMPlayer. This player does not need any codecs and it plays great. Also there are so many good settings you can choose.
    KMPLayer the best!!!
