I'm planning on doing a fresh install and was wondering what the best way to transfer all my firefox settings (ex: saved passwords, bookmarks, etc...)

maybe not the best way, but i sync using the addon xmarks. like that, i can use my passwords and favourites on multiple systems. and obviously, it allows easy backup/restoring szenarios.

I think, if you go to folder options and unhide your hidden files, then go to C:>Users<(your user folder)>AppData>Local>Mozilla>Firefox, this will have your personal firefox data in. Copy this folder, then when you've done the fresh install, copy this folder back, this should do it.

There should be one under Roaming too, might need both (was the case for Thunderbird last time I did this).

    Copy and paste.

There is a FAQ under the Mozilla website. Just copy and paste the underlying folders and paste them over the profile on the new copy of Mozilla.

For some unknown reason, I couldn't back up Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 with 1.4.9 and had to revert back to 1.4.8 A question to the developer went unanswered

I'm not sure what the problem was, I got the error messages "zip file could not be opened" and "backup"s file failed"

one gain of xmarks would be to have your favourites even with you when you don't have a browser. log on and you get them all..

I've just done this back and forth between about 3 different PCs (don't ask, long story). And this worked every time (from the mozilla website) - type %appdata% into the start menu search, then open up Roaming>Mozilla>Firefox>Profiles> copy the folder named with a string of random letters/numbers.default (there's only one). Then after your fresh install, make sure FF is not running, navigate to the same profiles folder, remove the default profile folder (to the desktop for now), paste in your original, and very important - rename the profile to the one you just removed (including the .default). Restart, voila - everything as it was in your previous installation.
