Not looking to start a flame war or anything like that, but what is the best web browser for a slower computer? Normally it's hard to say which is best, but I'm looking in a few specific categories. Which is the fastest, and which has the least memory leaks?

A friend of mine has a very slow old Thinkpad (T20-T23 or something old :)) and he is tired of using IE.

Chrome is really low on resources, I use it as my main. :)

chrome is pretty lightweight, but the lack of plugins etc makes me lean towards FF3.

Opera. I tried both "FF3" and Chrome on my old desktop, and they crippled it. Opera's latest stable version (9.63) works great though.

Hmmm, which is the most lightweight out of all of these?

Opera 9.6, Google Chrome, or K-Meleon?

Trying to make sure I make a good suggestion to my friend. :)

Chrome is great but...BETA. Obviously you will have some kinks ;).

Weird, I thought it was out of BETA, but anyways, if this is true, that narrows it down to K-Meleon and Opera.

It's not really a beta anymore. Not by now anyway.

Opera would probably be the lightest but i've never used it.

Although I like Opera and it improved a lot since version 8.5 (which crippled a computer when downloading files) I do find a few problems with it.

Also, in terms of RAM usage, its about on par with FF - maybe more under certain conditions.

One of the advantages of FF is that more pages wortk with it.
The front page of timesonline will not render correctly in Opera - oddly enough subpages do...??????

Anyway - try FF2, its older, but still getting updated, older means needs less resoures or Opera, but FF3 is OK too.

Oh well I forgot to say, RAM intesity is definitely important. I don't know how much RAM he has, but it's safe to say he doesn't have much (since it's old and he hasn't upgraded anything on it).

What OS is your friend using? I recently tried to load FF3 on an old HP Omnibook with Win 98SE but it wouldn't run. I think FF2 would work though.

I recommend Chrome. As long as you arent going to have a bunch of tabs open.

Its been out of Beta for a while now. ;)

Google Chrome is the best. Once it gets extension support it will destroy all the competing browsers..Firefox....Opera.....

Try chrome, you will be satisfied with it, unless you are attached to FF addons. :p

Chrome has been official for awhile now.

And I recommend it or FF3. Though IE7 will have the smallest impact on your system.

I recommend Opera - on my computer, at least, Opera uses less RAM than Firefox, Chrome, or IE7/8.
