    W7 is lighter than Vista.

I actually get an extra ~10-20 minutes under Power Saver/Eco Turbo Battery Mode in Windows 7 RTM 64Bit then Windows Vista SP2 32Bit.

In theory yes. But batery life is mostly dependant on how a machine is used than any power plans selected.

If you use your Win7 machine the same way you use your XP/Vista machine, don't expect anything seriously different.

With Balanced power setting, I have noticed a small (10 - 20 minute) increase in battery life, so therefore it is slightly better. But probably only because of the number of background processes I had in Vista.

With the Auto Dim and way less Disk Thrash there should be some battery savings also more efficient threading to each core. Problem is Windows 7 uses GPU acceleration which is great, but my GPU is 55nm vs my CPU is 45nm. If I could disable GPU acceleration I would get better battery life.

I'll let you know by Wednesday. I have a meeting on Tuesday were I normally go the entire thing unplugged and have about 30-50% battery remaining at the end.

i had to tweak a lot to get 2hr 15min in vista
but now win 7 gives me 2hr 15min without any tweaks or changes to the system
so i consider this an improvement
    ;)

    Disable Aero.
However you still have to consider VGA Driver settings if it is in 2D or 3D Mode depending on how OEM set it.
Usually GPU reverts to 2D mode in Desktop

At first, horrible, I don't know why. Now it's about on par with Vista, maybe 10-20 minutes more, which is a big difference. Battery gadget says 7:05 instead of 6:50 it did usually on Vista. That is upon boot. But I can say, yesterday I made it from noon to about 8 just doing some light surfing, and having iTunes blasting most of the time with the screen off. Was about 11% by the time I started charging, still had about 50 minutes left apparently.

Ok, just got back from the meeting. It was about 2 and a half hours, laptop was on the entire time, it reached 52%. Nice!

I also must comment on the speed that it comes out of hibernate, almost makes me believe it was Sleep I put it on. Amazing, loving this OS with each passing day!

Also noticed under W7 I never go over 52 process started in Vista I was always at or over 65, that has to help.

Also I saw this video Microsoft spefically designed Windows 7 to optimize IDLE. Under Vista my lowest CPu usage was 3% per core

in Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit,, The second I close all open windows I drop to 0% on Core 0 and 6% on Core 1.

And then it alternates between cores and IDLES each one to 0%, that really helps cooling therefore saving power.
