    Better than Avast! or AVG?

Bitdefender 8 does not have a realtime scanner, it's only on-demand. However, it would most likely have better detection rates than either Avast or AVG; it would be good to use it alongside one with real-time scanning; unless you're rarely on the internet, or have a good firewall, on-demand might not be necessary.

I'd personally recomend Avast, i have it on 3 personal computers, and over 5 Work computers, and its flawless. Works well, without hugging system resources.

Ya I agree that Avast! is cool. I've been using it, though I've read good things about BitDefender's detection rates. I like real-time scanning though, so I won't be making the switch to BitDefender 8 Free Edition :(

You could always use avast, and keep BD8 installed to do the on-demand scanning.
Or better yet, buy BitDefender 9. ;)

Yeah, you can use BD8 in a weekly or bi-nightly scheduled scan. I do something like that on our Linux fileserver at work. I run clamav with the ondemand scanning kernel module, but run a Bit Defender scan every Friday night from cron.

"Better" for me never involves the word "buy." ;)
