After a clean install of Vista Home Premium SP1 two weeks ago on my ASUS F3Sa, I came to work this morning, turned on my notebook, booted to the Vista log in screen, logged in, heard the desktop load, but then saw nothing but a black screen. I had to hard reboot the computer; Vista did load properly on my second attempt.
This is the first time I have had any trouble with this notebook since I did a clean install two weeks ago. But since the problem was strangely familiar (read on), I checked the Windows Update history. Immediately after my failed attempt to log in this morning, Windows Update installed a Definition Update for Windows Defender.
This exact same situation occurred at the end January -- just over two weeks ago. When I logged in, I would see a black screen with a white mouse arrow/cursor. I found a way to get to the desktop, but the computer would freeze and crash back to a black screen with a white mouse cursor. Nevertheless, I was able to backup all of my files and then perform a clean install. The only change that had been made to the computer in months was a Definition Update for Windows Defender.
I have used this notebook for over a year with no problems at all. But for the second time in less than a month, I am blaming a Definition Update for Windows Defender as the source for trouble with my notebook. Now I am hoping that I will not see the computer freeze randomly, go to black screen after log ins, hang when attempting to shut down, etc. like it did at the end of January.
Is anyone else seeing this strange problem? Is this only an ASUS problem (ASUS driver or app conflict) or is it a Vista problem? I have already posted this in the ASUS forum. I am posting this here to see if other Vista users encounter this problem.

It is not just Defender, but some other updates would cause Vista to get into a black screen. Restart (sometimes a few times) does solve the issue, or as you experienced, a reload.
Ideas are abound, but one recommendation that seems to solve the issue, is that you run a manual windows update, and apply what you ever find or being offered on the update list.

best thing you can do for vista is to disable it, I have disabled it form services and installed Kaspersky Internet Security 8.0 have never had problem with defender
