Alrt guys im really freaking out here and really need some help.
I was playing COD4 on my laptop(specs below) and it froze and the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH came up and the speakers were making a terrible sound. The laptop shut down. When i try to rebott no matter "start windows regulary" or "safe mode" or "last known good config" nothing happens. It attempts to boot then flashes the blue screen and restarts.
I cannot boot the OS up no matter what i try. I have my XP disk and i really do not want to do a fresh reformat. I tried the R for repair option on the XP OS disc but have no clue what im doing. It is probably a video or sound card driver that gave the Blue screen of death. But its beyond me of why i can not boot the **** OS now even in safe mode or last known good config..
Ahh. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

Can you remember any of your last hardware/software/driver changes? Try to reboot again, but make sure "Disable restart at BSOD" is selected, that way you can record the code.
For the meantime I would use a Knoppix Live CD and set the laptop to boot from CD first to load up an OS and backup your files to an external hard drive, etc. Then try to use another tech help boot cd, hiren, etc. to see if you can get closer to your issue. Most likely, the easiest route will be to backup and reinstall Windows. -
Since you have a disc just do a repair install. It will not erase any of your files, just reinstall all of the Windows junk. So your files & programs will still be there and function properly. (This is different than the 'R' thing you did before. That was the recovery console. You won't be using that.)

what was the last thing you did, before cod4?
-
I get all the way to selecting the partion that the OS is on (well it is highlighted by default) and
1. there is no option to press "R"
2. i press "R" nothing happens?

Yea that's the problem...That repair option only shows in some cases, if the disk is repairable. So in this case it might be a serious problem, that only a reinstall may be able to fix.

You can either use the Automatic Recovery/Repair Console (Press F2/R at XP Setup Start), that should detect the current windows install.
Or you can reinstall XP, but leave the current file system intact. Only the currnt windows folder will be overwritten, and your OS settings will be lost, but the files will remain. You may have to take ownership of your old Documents and Settings folder. -
That stinks that it's not giving you a repair installation option. It's a great feature.
Login to the recovery console (via the xp cd) and run the command 'chkdsk /r' .

That should locate any bad sectors you may have on your hard drive and attempt to recover the data. It's possible you have some bad sectors where important Windows files are located. -
Why not do a driver by driver boot and bypass the one that's probably causing the problem.

cheers ...
