My laptop (HP dv7) came with a Bluray drive. I assumed that there would be software included for playback, and rented a movie, but it wouldn't play.
    Any solution that is free?
    Thanks.

You could grab the trial of WinDVD and use it watch your rental.

    http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1189528458632#versionTabview=tab2&tabview=tab0

Unfortunately, I haven't heard of a free way to watch Bluray movies. At least that could hold you over while you have it rented, so as to not waste the money you paid to rent the movie.

I'm sorry that I don't have any advice that is more helpful. This is what I'm going to do until I catch wind of a free solution (when I get my new laptop, that is).

Ok, I am very sorry to say this, but I guess the trial does not support Bluray. That is incredibly lame for Corel to do that. I wish I would have known before recommending the software to you. :/

I'm sorry for misleading you. That was the only hope I had of a free solution.

hm my hp came with blueray playback software. check your cd's and all, if there's nothing there to playback.

oh, and start windows media center, and check if there's nothing in there, too (as it was integrated into it, at the default installation)

Can you check what that software is called and let me know?

I already tried HP MediaSmart which came with Cyberlink DVD Suite, but it doesn't work.

no i can't. i've installed from fresh and now use cyberlink powerdvd 8 for blueray (and 7 for hd-dvd as i have some).

and i have anydvd hd for the cases where the bluerays don't work (no clue). funnily, my dad bought a blueray for his pc, and got cyberlink with it, too. and a disk, even (casino royale i think). exactly that disk doesn't work without anydvd hd at all :)

I downloaded the trial version of CyberLink PowerDVD 9. I put a BluRay disc in and it played all the previews but the feature movie wouldn't play. Is it because it's disabled in the trial version or there is something wrong?

I watch my bluerays in the quickplay hp option, but i would recomend to you to update your quickplay software to the latest. Just enter to the Quickplay and put update.

Download the update and install it.

You should not have trouble then for watching movies in your lappy and if you are going to connect it to a tv, use one display only and make the tv display as default.

    Good luck,

My laptop oddly enough, didn't come with QuickPlay but with MediaSmart, which doesn't support Bluray. This doesn't make sense because it came with a Bluray player.
I am going to call HP to see if there is a way I can get QuickPlay.

I downloaded an updated version of MediaSmart from HP's website and it's working now. :)
