Is there a way to just boot to the login screen from USB. I followed online tutorials but, when I boot windows from an external USB it only brings me to a screen where it asks me to install windows 7. I just want to boot the computer to the login screen without having to re install windows. Is this possible if so how can i do it? In other words I just want to start-up windows 7 from a USB and then everything is back to normal.

    Thanks.

Windows 7 does not support what you are wanting to to do, Windows 8 will support booting a live OS from a USB Drive.

The thing is there is some software that starts with windows that I do not want to start. and it starts on the login screen. I tried to boot windows in safe mode but that software still starts and I do not know its name. I thought that booting from a USB and getting to the login screen would avoid it from starting but apparently that is not possible. How can I get the windows to boot without starting any 3rd party applications and without having to reinstall the whole OS.

    Thanks.

You have to change the boot sequence in BIOS so it boots from USB first. Windows 7 will not load and run as the OS will start loading from the USB stick. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Is your primary HDD infected and you don't want to boot-up from it but you want to be able to see it so you can use other tools to clean it?

Have you tried CCleaner or some other startup manager?

My goal is getting around a software that runs in the background when windows starts up. Its undetectable. I want windows to just start up as it should without running any extra programs in the background that save my login information. No need to explain the whole story now but I even tried safe mode and the program still ran in the background which essentially logs my keystrokes, how can i get windows 7 to startup normally without starting up anything extra programs.

The only ways that I know of to accomplish what you want currently is a clean install or use a Linux Live Distro that boots from USB. Or better yet cleanse the system of the keylogger, unless the keylogger is installed my an entity that has authority over your machine....

Thats the whole point it is installed and built by the entity of the authority that's why its undetectable. Seriously though theres no way to make that program not start with windows? :S

That sounds a little paranoid to me. What exactly does this 'undetectable' process do?

    @OP

Windows 7 and older cannot be run natively from a USB drive. Your issue is that you need to remove that keylogger. Your issue is not that you need to boot Windows from a USB drive.

I suggest you figure out what keylogger your friend placed by using Antivirus and Antimalware software. If that does not work, then use something like Process Explorer from Sysinternals (Microsoft owned) to provide a dump of all running processes on your system. If that is unable to show the keylogger process, then the fastest and best way to remove it is to REINSTALL WINDOWS. I'm sorry, but if you are unwilling to do what is recommended, then there is no way for us to help you. There is not much we can do for your unique situation from afar. Also, I'm not sure how comfortable you are with running some more advanced programs that can BORK your system if something is done accidentally or incorrectly, so I'm not even going to suggest any of those. And next time, please provide the "actual" problem in the first post itself instead of waiting for people to suggest things that won't help your situation.

You didn't tell us the whole story. What your friend did is illegal in most countries. Are you not able to re-install yourself? Why do you need your friend to install?

Sorry at some point you need to help yourself out of this....
To answer your other question, yes Windows has ability, you can use the Registry Editor (advanced users only), Msconfig, and most anti-virus or anti-malware should be able to remove it.

this is a case CALL FOR REINSTALLATION FROM SCRATCH(and make sure you ask windows to reformat to be on the paranoid side).

Was that 'entity of the authority' perhaps your mom? Your situation sounds a bit hinky to me...That would also explain why you simply want to get around it instead of eliminating it with a re-install....

You have to use the NT 6.x fast installer, it's in the link in my sig.
It allows you to install Windows 7 or Vista on pretty much any USB drive.

I'm warning you though, don't use any random USB 2.0 flash drive, it could take hours to install and boot for the first time.
Use a USB HDD, USB 3.0 flash drive, or at least a high end USB 2.0 flash drive.

However, I'm not sure if you have any use for it, you can't log in to your existing account just like that. You need a clean install.
