I bought an Acer laptop from Bestbuy but when I oepned it it did not have the eSATA port i thought it had. If i return it now I'll have to take the ding of the 15% restocking fee. I tried to like the laptop but that missing eSATA port really blows. Now I'm going to try to sell it on craigslist, I could 80% most likely break even on it.

So i figured maybe I could get something out of it if I don't break even by using the Win7 upgrade on my other Dell laptop. Will that be possible?

Probably not? The offer is by each invididual manufacturer for their machines. I doubt they are interchangeable.

Also, are you sure it doesn't have an eSATA port? Sometimes they combine a USB 2.0 and eSATA in one port..

definitely sure it doesn't. it says (usb/esata) and the port isn't punched out (plastic still covering it).

The offer is for an OEM copy specific to Acer.

    Not going to happen legally.

what does that mean? they'll send me a disc but it'll be loaded with Acer bloatware?

i might just keep the laptop, trying the USB2.0 and i don't notice any difference from the eSATA unless when i'm moving large files across drives, but that's like once a week.

It means that legally you can only apply it to the Acer. And yes, it might have the Acer bloatware pre-installed...there is nothing preventing them from that. I'm not sure how Acer handled the Vista upgrade program, so maybe there will not be any bloatware.

The Acer OEM disc probably will also have the capability to verify the laptop is an Acer. Put it in the Dell, and the disc will install an unlicensed copy (and you'd still need to buy a key) if it installs at all.

You have an ExpressCard slot right? You might be able to get one of those to enjoy eSATA's speeds.

    What model Acer is it?

well if i sell the laptop, it'll only work for one user anyways right? i guess i'll just leave it as is for the potential buyer of the laptop.

    thanks for the help :)

hi, as Greg says....... i have my eye on one of these for backup.
for once a week and $46 you could keep your laptop and buy off ebay (or similar reputable company  )
