Hey guys, I just bought a new sony vaio laptop. I was thinking that I should reinstall windows with something like Windows 7 Enterprise or something.

My reasoning for doing something like this is that when u buy a new laptop there is usually a load of crap software on it that you dont even need.

Is this a good idea? do other people do this? :)

W7 Enterprise is for enterprises I think. Were you provided W7 install disc. I guess that you have W7 Home Premium, it's enough for most people, it has everything for basic everyday use.
Reinstalling your OS after you bought the PC is a good idea, because when you just uninstall bloatware, some part and bits still are left, so starting your OS from clean sheet of paper is much better.

You need to check the Sony site and download all your drivers for that model before you re-install using a non Sony disc.

Crapware can be uninstalled easily enough using Control Panel (icon view) > Programs and features.

    or use PC decrapifier

The first thing I do when I buy any computer is open the box, format, reinstall windows, then use the product key that is stuck underneath the laptop

No harm in that, perfectly legal, and gets rid of the crapware, their registry entries, and everything

Then I would go to the manufacturer site and download the latest drivers

Check the Sony webpages on a clean install order of drivers for your model. Sony has some dependencies for various drivers and they must be installed in the correct order. All the drivers can also be found on their webpage specific to your model.
Have two different Sony models - did clean installs on both. Recommend re-use whatever they came with (guessing Home Premium).

W7 Enterprise is the same as Ultimate, which is what I run.

I reinstalled for a clean isntall and then installed the drivers I needed from Sony's site. Was worth it.

With VAIO's it's extremely important that you install drivers on a clean install in a particular order. You can find these recommendations on Sony's support site for clean installing Windows 7. There was a user in the F owner's thread who was having major trackpad issues. Turned out he installed drivers in the wrong order. Everything was fine after that.

Also, it's not fair to us to simply state that you've bought a Sony laptop. They're soooo different. WHICH laptop did you get? Provided we know the model number, we can guide you to the thread where you can get more specific answers from actual users of your model.
