Broken laptop keyboard- test with external keyboard?

My old Asus laptop has lot of problems. Monitor issue with lines that most likely needs to have screen replaced, but also the keyboard doesn't work. The only key that works is letter f when on chrome it presses find. I brought this to repair shop and they are looking over it.


The thing is I think there is a chance there is virus on computer because I downloaded certain things there. My question is assuming they say keyboard doesn't work, could I use an external keyboard to test on USB port to see if that would work? Is there any chance if there was a virus in the Asus laptop it could transfer to the external keyboard?


Also if I buy new keyboard is it very hard to replace yourself? I almost always go to computer repair shop if I have computer issues.

 

Anyone? I'm getting the old laptop back and want to make sure before I connect external keyboard.

 

A quick Google search shows that it is possible to hook up an external keyboard to your laptop through your USB port. Some have had issues but they are in the minority.

Can't answer your question about replacing the laptop keyboard as I don't have your model. Try the Asus specific forum on this forum.

No one can answer your question about a virus. Use a anti-virus program after you get the keyboard issue resolved and do a scan. And if you have a virus it should not transfer to the external keyboard.

 

Make sure the USB is 2.0 anything 1.0 will make it hard to set it as a default keyboard. And eBay sells replacement keyboards that is easier to fix then your Display repair. I've replaced keyboards and they don't cost "a Leg and Arm" for them. You could also the display repair if your technically inclined to do it.

 

Got laptop back from repair shop. There are language issues because I can't speak their language but the guy that I spoke to said keyboard doesn't work. I asked them so if I connect external keyboard does that work. He said yes but when I tried it now external keyboard does not work. I asked him if the hard drive or ram has issues and he said no but I'm not sure he understood me.

Does this mean it's more than just my laptop keyboard? Shouldn't an external keyboard mean it should work even if internal keyboard has issues?

Laptop is Asus u45jc a1. Use ports should be 2.0?

Wrong place. Plug it in to the USB port. You didn't tell us what OS you are using.
Some keyboards may require a driver. I got the following info from the web:

"On a Windows Vista, 7, or 8 computer, navigate to Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Devices and Printers → Add a device. Once you find your keyboard in the list, right-click it and open Properties. From that window, select the checkbox labeled "Drivers for keyboard, mice, etc (HID)," then click OK. I plugged keyboard into usb. I mistyped lan.

It does not recognize keyboard.

 

Hate to say this but it may be time to buy another laptop.

 

If USB2 and not working I think you got other problems here then.

Time to take it to the heap and retire it. Your throwing good money after bad repairs.

 

yes its broken. Not going to use this asus laptop anymore. But its most likely the motherboard and not the keyboard.

 

Did you try http://www.keyboardtester.co? There are online Keyboard other Testers too which can be quickly used to test the Keyboard, irrespective of Brands.

i use wireless microsoft 2000 keyboard and mouse and works great
