    Hi guys

I've converted some AVI files to DVD format and burnt them using WinAVI 8.0, problem is that the resulting DVDs will only play in VideoLanClient, WMP 11 plays them but all I get is a black screen the audio plays but no video. :(

Does anyone know what could be the problem?

Thanks in advance for any advice/help :)

Well to tell you the truth WinAVI has been rubbish since ver 7, try avi2dvd it's free and easy to use, then use something like Nero or Ashampoo Burning Studio

If video disappears or becomes discolored (for example, it turns purple or green), turn off video overlays by doing the following:

    1. In Windows Media Player, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab.
    2. Click the Advanced button.
    3. In the Video Acceleration area, clear the Use overlays check box.

If the problem continues, try turning off the video mixing renderer (VMR) by clearing the Use video mixing renderer check box, located just above the Use overlays check box.

If you can restore the missing video by doing something like maximizing the Player or putting another window in front of it, there may be a problem with your video card driver.

And did u select the right format PAL or NTSC....??
And also select the correct DVD region for ur DVD ROM....

I normally do not use WMP to play DVDs....
VLC is gud or realplayer or nero showtime....!!

The screen is just Black. As far as I could see there aren't any region options in WinAVI and even if I select PAL WMP still only plays the audio...

Reason why I want it to run in WMP is so if I go round my mates houses I know they've got something we can use to watch the films with.

while converting did u choose the output format from here....
    View attachment 19758

and did u choose ur dvd region from the device manager -> optical drive -> dvd region settngs

if none works u would need decoding codecs....

i ve got nero installed as well....so maybe windows media player uses the codecs installed by nero to decode the dvd for playback....!!
the dvds u write....do they work fine in a dvd player..??

if u r running those dvds in another computer....so why not just convert them to xvid avi or divx avi....which for the same quality will be alot smaller than a dvd and normally can be written to a cd-r....

to check the availability of ur dvd decoder....Click Start, click Run, type dvdupgrd /upgrade, and then press ENTER

mine shows Nero AG sw decoder....so i know nero is helping wmp 11 to run the dvds....and microsoft have stated in their site that wmp 11 does not come installed with dvd decoders..!!
Vlc uses something else which i dont know.... :p
also u cud install the trial versions of the plugins and confirm that the lack of a dvd decoder is the main problem....

    Thanks that helped.

I narrowed it down to not setting the format i.e. PAL or NTSC...

Just a dumb week I'm having I guess.

Thanks for the help though, I'm trying out Nero now to see if it's any better at authoring and burning DVDs...

The real reason WMP doesn't play DVDs is Windows doesn't include a MPEG2 decoder (Bill Gates and Co. are too damned cheap to license one). Install (and set up) FFDShow and they'll play. As far as authoring DVDs, you might want to try FAVC. It uses the best free encoder out there (HEnc) and is free.
